The Role

The Cyber Systems Engineer is responsible for providing subject matter expertise for information systems and services within internal and customer deliverable systems. Working within the Systems Engineering team, the Security Engineer conducts security assessments and design, remediates issues, develops and maintains security design, development of certification and accreditation documentation, and support in the management of risk and provides recommendations of the courses of action for their allocated systems and subsystems.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide security related advice to project teams through the lifecycle of the information system including acquisition and sustainment.

  • Provide security related advice to project teams on requirements, design, implemention, and operation of system.

  • Develop and maintain information security documentation including but not limited to: System Overview Documents; System Risk Management plans; System Security Plans; Standard Operating Procedures; and Incident Response plans.

  • Develop and maintain security design and requirements as part of the systems engineering program.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with applicable internal stakeholders and government agencies and authorities.

  • Provide support and participate in system level reviews throughout the lifecycle as well as participating in peer reviews.

  • Conduct sub-system level design reviews with subcontractors.

  • Some ‘hands on’ IT activities may be required from time to time to implement technical controls where required.

  • Ability to sometimes provide input or guidance to lower level professionals with tasks and assignments.

  • The ability to influence others and direct them towards a goal without reliance on authority or position.

    Skills, Experience and Qualifications:

Essential

  • Requires a University Degree in Information Technology, Engineering, Cybersecurity, or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum 5 years of prior relevant experience (when a University Degree is held).

  • Requires advanced knowledge government security standards, controls and guidelines.

  • Practical to substantial knowledge of projects, programs, or systems relevant to the business with the ability to make enhancements and leverage knowledge in daily work.

  • Experience in the development, delivery and integration of computing and communications systems and networks.

  • Experience in design, deploy and maintaining Windows / Linux environments including hardening.

  • Previous experience in both technical and Cyber-Security or Information Assurance roles.

  • Minimum 3 years experience (when an Advanced Degree is held).

Desirable

  • An Advanced Degree in a related field.

  • Postgraduate qualifications in Information Technology, Engineering, or Cybersecurity.

  • Certified IRAP Assessor.

  • Information assurance management qualifications such as CISM, CISSP, or GSLC.

  • Information assurance auditing qualifications such as CISA, CRISC, GSNA, ISO 27001 Lead Auditor, or PCI QSA.

  • Minimum 3 years experience (when an Advanced Degree is held).

  • Practical knowledge of project management is desirable.

  • Experience with and detailed understanding of the Australian Defence Technical Regulatory Frameworks.

  • Experience in cross domain solutions.

  • Security or Information Assurance roles.

  • Incidence Response roles.
