Department Summary:

MITRE’s Treasury, Economics and Commerce (TEC) Division, P813 Department, within the Center for Government Enterprise Modernization (Treasury’s FFRDC operated by MITRE) supports multiple sponsors at the U.S. Department of Treasury and Treasury’s partners in the interagency, the private sector, the international community, academia, and non-governmental organizations. P813 work programs, initiatives, and advanced applied research efforts span a variety of economic and financial missions, such as assessing and implementing economic policies, securing US currency, deploying the tools of economic statecraft, combatting illicit finance, supporting sanctions, optimizing the use of and mitigating risks with artificial intelligence, understanding economic dynamics and financial systems, supporting whole of nation strategic competition, regulating financial markets, monitoring and adapting to changes in financial technologies, protecting critical financial infrastructure, modernizing information systems and data architectures, , and advancing cybersecurity.

Roles and Responsibilities:

TEC’s P813 Department, primarily supporting the U.S. Department of Treasury and its Bureaus and Offices, is seeking a highly-motivated Ph.D. Principal Economist to serve as a member of the P813 and TEC team, as well as work across the Center for Enterprise Modernization and the other FFRDCs operated by MITRE, to support diverse sponsor-directed projects and MITRE-led applied research and development efforts aimed to advanced broad analytic capabilities and transformative capabilities in economics. Demonstrated experience in or for government, working across and leading multiple stakeholders, applying doctoral-level training and economic tools, capabilities, and methodologies are required to meet and exceed sponsor expectations. Demonstrated expertise in economic areas such as advanced econometrics, geoeconomics, supply chains, international trade, international finance, applied macroeconomic modelling, macroeconomics and microeconomics, financial and monetary economics, industrial organization, economic forecasting, economic policy analysis, economic regulatory analysis, financial stability, computable general equilibrium modeling, complex valuations, cost-benefit analysis, or spatial modeling and statistics, are key.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

The Principal Economist will provide insightful leadership and problem solving for the U.S. Department of Treasury and its partners in collaboration with stakeholders across MITRE, the private sector, academia, and federal, state, and local sectors. Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and/or supporting diverse sponsor-directed work projects

  • Supporting MITRE and sponsor executives in translating their economics vision, strategies, mission, goals, and objectives into actionable programs and effective capabilities into a coherent concept of operations in support of driving impactful economic outcomes for the U.S. Department of Treasury and its partners

  • Operating with and interacting with a diverse set of government sponsors and MITRE teams, applying economics training and experiences to define, track, and advance impactful economic analysis tools and transformative capabilities

  • Translating technical economic analysis to non-economist audiences

  • Being self-motivated and creative in identifying new ways to support economic and financial regulatory agencies

  • Representing TEC and P813 in collaborative opportunities across MITRE where economics is a predominant focus

  • Representing perspectives, authorities, responsibilities, and experiences of U.S. Department of Treasury to define strategic vision and direction and identify approaches to meaningfully and impactful accomplish complex whole of nation economic and financial outcomes

  • Identifying key applied research areas and challenges on economic issues and foster partner and collaboration opportunities across the FFRDC, MITRE, academia, private sector, and with the U.S. Department of Treasury and its partners

  • Working with MITRE project and division leadership and identify the skills and competencies to further shape and align both current and future MITRE economic workforce and work programs

Basic Requirements:

  • Requires PhD in Economics or related field with minimum combination of (5) years’ post-graduate studies and work experience

  • Demonstrated work in an economics field supporting government, regulators or non-governmental organizations

  • Handle large data sets, especially macroeconomic and financial

  • Monitor major economic and financial regulatory policy changes

  • Undertake and complete independent economic analysis

  • Ability to secure one or more Treasury Suitability clearances and eventually TS/SCI

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications include the demonstrated ability to:

  • Model financial market risk

  • Develop macro-econometric tools for forecasting and trend analysis

  • Map and analyze large-scale financial networks and incorporating national security questions into economic analysis

  • Develop structural economic modeling tools

  • Conduct economic Forecasting

  • Estimate impacts of shocks on domestic and international economies

  • Employ a wide range of applied econometric techniques

  • Undertake economic policy assessments and/or benefit cost analysis
