SLAC Job Postings

Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) seeks an Associate Scientist for an appointment with the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences (SIMES). The Associate Scientist will be responsible for conducting research and developing techniques for understanding the fundamental physical properties of quantum materials. The scientist will collaborate with scientists within SIMES, as well as with other groups at SLAC and Stanford University.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Identify designs for complex moiré heterostructures based on atomically-thin Van der Waals layers, that might be expected to host novel correlated electron phases.

  • Develop, construct, and lithographically nanopattern such heterostructures.

  • Develop techniques to improve control and uniformity of structural parameters such as twist angle and strain in such heterostructures.

  • Design and carry out magnetotransport measurements down to milliKelvin temperatures

  • Develop, maintain, and trouble-shoot experimental tools, techniques, and laboratory infrastructure relevant to such measurements.

  • Identify which characterization techniques would provide key complementary information about moiré structures of interest, and develop or implement those techniques as applicable.

  • Train PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in experimental techniques, selection of compelling scientific problems, analysis of data, and communication about results and questions. Collaborate with such junior scientists to achieve mutual scientific goals.

Note: The Associate Scientist position is the entry level in the Staff Scientist career path. The Associate Scientist is a 3-to-5-year fixed term research staff position. The second level of this career path, Staff Scientist, is a regular continuing position. The Associate Scientist position is scheduled to be assessed after the 3-to-5-year period with the possibility of appointment to the Staff Scientist level. Appointment to the Staff Scientist level requires a review and evaluation of documented scientific achievement.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • PhD. in physics, material science, applied physics, or a related discipline and two years of relevant postdoctoral experience in the following:

  • Stacking of complex moiré heterostructures based on atomically-thin Van der Waals layers, and lithographic nanopatterning of such structures

  • Precision cryogenic magnetotransport measurements down to milliKelvin temperatures, including designing and trouble-shooting the relevant electronics to achieve low noise and low electron temperature , and trouble-shooting cryostat operation

  • Analysis of correlated electronic states which may be magnetic, topological, and/or superconducting

  • Use of complementary probes such as cryogenic scanning probes, microwave reflectometry, compressibility measurement, and optical spectroscopy

  • Record of excellence in professional achievement, as evidenced by a strong publication record

  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research, including both defining compelling scientific targets and pursuing those targets

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment and mentor and supervise students

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in written and oral communication

  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex technical and scientific information

SLAC Competencies:

  • Effective Decisions: Uses job knowledge and solid judgment to make quality decisions in a timely manner.

  • Self-Development: Pursues a variety of venues and opportunities to continue learning and developing.

  • Dependability: Can be counted on to deliver results with a sense of personal responsibility for expected outcomes.

  • Initiative: Pursues work and interactions proactively with optimism, positive energy, and motivation to move things forward.

  • Adaptability: Flexes as needed when change occurs, maintains an open outlook while adjusting and accommodating changes.

  • Communication: Ensures effective information flow to various audiences and creates and delivers clear, appropriate written, spoken, presented messages.

  • Relationships: Builds relationships to foster trust, collaboration, and a positive climate to achieve common goals.
