Position Overview:

SLAC is seeking a System Safety Engineering Group Lead in AD (Accelerator Directorate). The System Safety Engineering Division is responsible for the design, implementation and maintenance of all personnel safety system associated with most of SLAC’s particle accelerators. The Group Lead is responsible for both the technical leadership for a Safety System, as well as overseeing a group of talented engineers and coordinators.

Responsibilities include interfacing and collaborating with a broad range of stakeholders, such as Engineers and Scientists within the Accelerator Directorate, as well as other SLAC directorates, including the Radiation Physics Department, and colleagues at other DOE labs and in the international accelerator community.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Your specific responsibilities include:

Management

  • Direct the work and collaborate with other engineers, coordinators, designers, technicians, and maintenance personnel.

  • Manage and interface with vendors/subcontractors as well as other stakeholders and resources at the lab, including oversight of outsourced project scope, schedule, risks, resources and quality of work.

  • Support projects and programs with cost estimates, budgets, schedules and procurement of key components.

  • Maintain compliance with all applicable SLAC policies and standards, such as the Conduct of Engineering, the Electrical Equipment Inspection Program and all safety protocols. Maintain all required personal training up to date.

  • Foster a collaborative and creative work environment, based on open collaboration, mutual trust and respect.

Technical

  • Develop system requirements and specifications; create and review procedures and user manuals.

  • Define, implement, and execute reliability and qualification tests. Design electronic test benches; perform safety and reliability analysis and tests, and develop all associated documentation.

  • Integrate systems, perform reliability and failure data analysis; generate test procedures and work with a team overseeing installations and to field-certify the systems deployed.

  • Manage interface with field support and other technical entities to resolve quality and reliability issues.

  • Develop, manage and maintain a thorough documentation system for all existing and planned safety systems.

  • Other duties may also be assigned

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • B.S. degree in electrical engineering or related field and 5 years of relevant experience in safety system design and/or engineering team management.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a high performing and highly skilled team of engineers.

  • Sound knowledge of electronic circuits with several years of experience in design, development, or manufacturing of analog and/or digital circuits. Proficiency in common software

  • Demonstrated knowledge on CAD tools for schematic entry and systems modeling.

  • Strong knowledge in project management and contract management

  • Good working knowledge of programming ladder logic and PLC-based systems.

  • Proven track record in taking initiative on projects, using analytical skills, and working with minimal supervision; extreme attention to details.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and/or work efficiently as part of a collaborative team, lead, plan and organize projects, meet scheduled commitments on time.

  • Ability to manage the technical efforts of subordinates and peers (technicians, engineering associates, and engineers).

  • Highly organized, good interpersonal skills and strong communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Familiarity with international safety standards (e.g. IEC 61508 - ISA/ANSI 84.01).

The expected pay range for this position is $143,000 to $177,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
