Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is upgrading the soft X-ray free electron laser as part of the LCLS-II-HE Project. The Magnetic Measurements Group at SLAC is responsible for tuning and measuring the undulators used in LCLS-II-HE. Very high precision measurements are required to meet tolerances on undulator magnetic field. Applying corrections to the magnetic field of undulators is necessary to make the electron beam trajectory straight and to maintain the proper phase relationship to a light wave. The Magnetic Measurements Group is seeking an engineer to assist with magnetic measurements.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

The primary responsibilities of the successful candidate include the following:

  • Perform undulator magnetic measurements using precision test benches.

  • Analyze the measurements and determine what corrections are required to the magnetic field to bring the undulator parameters within specification.

  • Work closely with technicians to bring a device into the lab, set it up at the measurement bench and make the magnetic field adjustments.

  • Work closely with alignment crews to fiducialize the devices.

  • Work closely with line management and the undulator system physicist to make sure the final data set is complete and the undulator specifications and schedules are met.

  • Be responsible for timely calibrations of the related instrumentation.

  • Assist in carrying out other magnetic measurement group tasks.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • The candidate must have B.S. in physics, Electrical Engineering or related technical field, and two years of relevant experience in magnetic measurement.

  • Proficient in magnetic measurement techniques.

  • Knowledge of the C programming language, Labwindows and Matlab.

  • Knowledge of alignment and fiducialization.

  • Have the discipline to make accurate production measurements on a strict schedule.

  • Ability to work on multiple tasks.

  • Demonstrated ability to work safely in a team environment and to communicate with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. degree in physics or experience typically representative of post-doctoral, early career physicists will be a plus.

  • A good knowledge of variable gap hybrid undulator magnetics.

  • Experience using the EPICS control system.

  • Experience with handling strong permanent magnets.

SLAC Employee Competencies:

  • Effective Decisions: Uses job knowledge and solid judgment to make quality decisions in a timely manner.

  • Self-Development: Pursues a variety of venues and opportunities to continue learning and developing.

  • Dependability: Can be counted on to deliver results with a sense of personal responsibility for expected outcomes.

  • Initiative: Pursues work and interactions proactively with optimism, positive energy, and motivation to move things forward.

  • Adaptability: Flexes as needed when change occurs, maintains an open outlook while adjusting and accommodating changes.

  • Communication: Ensures effective information flow to various audiences and creates and delivers clear, appropriate written, spoken, presented messages.

  • Relationships: Builds relationships to foster trust, collaboration, and a positive climate to achieve common goals.

Physical requirements and Working conditions:

  • Consistent with its obligations under the law, the University will provide reasonable accommodation to any employee with a disability who requires accommodation to perform the essential functions of his or her job.

Work standards:

  • Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues and clients and with external organizations.

  • Promote Culture of Safety: Demonstrates commitment to personal responsibility and value for environment, safety and security; communicates related concerns; uses and promotes safe behaviors based on training and lessons learned. Meets the applicable roles and responsibilities as described in the ESH Manual, Chapter 1—General Policy and Responsibilities: http://www-group.slac.stanford.edu/esh/eshmanual/pdfs/ESHch01.pdf
