Amazon Manufacturing Engineer – Satellite Receiving and Electrical Checkout, Kuiper Payload Processing Facility in Merritt Island, Florida

Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.

The success of Kuiper depends on the quality, reliability, cost, integration, throughput, and security of the products delivered. It is a fast-paced, dynamic environment. As part of the Kuiper team, you will solve difficult problems where resolutions have high impact, and help create a brand-new set of launch site processes and standards. To be successful you need to be highly motivated and detail oriented while maintaining the highest standards of execution.

The Manufacturing Engineer will lead a team of technicians through satellite receiving and electrical checkout operations and will support final assembly and integration activities. This individual will work closely with other launch operations, satellite manufacturing and logistics/transportation teams.

The Manufacturing Engineer supports satellite receiving and electrical checkout across multiple payload processing facilities. The individual will set-up, execute the test, and review test data. They will be responsible for writing procedures for both mechanical and electrical test operations based on requirements. The individual will identify and implement process controls, investigate non-conformances and support continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate is comfortable in a highly technical and collaborative setting and is able to interpret technical requirements and turn them into actionable steps.

Export Control Requirement:

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Key job responsibilities

•Receiving satellites at the launch site

•Performing electrical checkout on received satellites

•Interfacing with facilities personnel to set up and work within a payload processing facility

•Supporting commissioning of receiving and electrical checkout equipment

•Authoring and implementing work instructions and standard processes

• Identifying electrical harness needs and maintaining harnesses

• Identifying opportunities to improve efficiency in operational processes for satellite receiving and electrical checkout

•Evaluating and improving takt time

•Resolving anomalies and implementing corrective actions

•Operations will occur primarily on first shift, Monday-Friday but off-shift and weekend work may be required depending on production/launch schedules

•Must be willing and able to perform extended travel up to 25% annually, either domestically or internationally as business needs demand

A day in the life

The receiving and electrical checkout Manufacturing Engineer will spend the majority of their day on the shop floor leading their team through satellite offload, receiving and electrical checkout operations. They will work with other engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams to set up and maintain the receiving and electrical checkout equipment. They will be responsible for validating test data. They will implement engineering best practices in a safe and repeatable manner, implement efficiency improvements and reduce non-conformances. They will become a subject matter expert for their operations and train other team members. The individual will have experience in handling space hardware for integration and test, with particular focus on electrical testing and harnessing.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, manufacturing, mechanical engineering, physics, material science or other related discipline, or relevant experience

  • 1+ years experience in developing, testing or working with integrated electrical systems and harnessing

  • 2+ years of experience with developing space electrical or mechanical assemblies

  • 1+ years developing and/or running functional test procedures

  • Experience handling electrical testing equipment

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Passport

  • Ability and willingness to comply with the travel requirements of the Government of French Guiana (i.e. vaccinations for yellow fever and COVID-19)

  • Ability to pass Kennedy Space Center background checks

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production

  • Experience with various automated manufacturing processes, including assembly and test methods at component level, subsystem, and system level

  • Experience with handling and tracking systems for continuous material flow to manufacturing lines

  • Highly familiar with qualification and acceptance test procedures, and automated data acquisition and collection

  • Formal training/certification in Operational Excellence Systems (Lean, 5S, Six Sigma, etc.)

  • Strong organizational, analytical, root cause analysis and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills

  • Able to climb up and down ladders, work in tight spaces, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching may be required to perform the functions of this position

  • Able to lift at least 25 lbs. unassisted
