The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, University of Miami invites applications for a Research Associate II position working with the Observer Program Branch (OPB) at NOAA’s Southeast Fisheries Science Center’s (SEFSC) Galveston, TX, laboratory. The OPB pursues research and collects scientific data for stock assessment and management of living marine resources in the Gulf of Mexico and western Atlantic Ocean. This research involves close collaboration with OPB scientists and other researchers at the SEFSC.

The selected individual’s primary duties will include:

a) coordinate and conduct observer training with OPB staff and SEFSC scientists;

b) conduct official observer debriefings for the OPB;

c) work closely with OPB staff and other NOAA scientists in creating training, decksheets, manuals, and outreach materials for special projects, new fisheries, and sampling updates;

d) assist as needed with observer or SEFSC survey duties at-sea aboard fishing or research vessels, assist with the collection, validation, processing, storage and review of at-sea commercial fishery data; and,

e) other duties as assigned.

Travel will be required for debriefing observers, attending conferences and meetings, sea time, etc. The selected individual must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license to operate a government vehicle in completion of assigned tasks, i.e. to/from deployed sites.

Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science degree or higher in fisheries biology, resource management, environmental science, or a related field, and at least two years of post-BS relevant experience gained during education or training or in employment in a research position. Necessary experience includes having been deployed as a NOAA observer on commercial fishing vessels (minimum 120 days at sea). Necessary skills include experience with Google Applications (G-Mail, G-Chat, G-Drive, G-Forms), MS Office (especially Excel), and strong interpersonal skills. A broad set of training and skills are needed to successfully interview/debrief field biologists, interact with commercial fishermen, and interact with internal and external scientists. The ideal person will be able to quickly learn new software; be very attentive to detail; and have strong organizational skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills will be helpful to communicate with a diverse group of people in collaborative projects.
