ESS serves as a core resource to internal University investigators and stakeholders, supporting interdepartmental and intercollegiate cross-disciplinary research program goals. Concurrently, the ESS lab maintains an independent and robust commercial research business, providing contracted research services to external national and international industry partners. Primary Function: The Assistant Professor and Research Director (Director) leads initiatives between the ESS laboratory and the University's Academic Health Center to conceive, design, and execute high-impact joint collaborations which advance and accelerate research performed at the University. The Director is responsible for developing and maintaining new, existing and long-term business relationships between the ESS lab, internal and external collaborative partners. In order to accomplish these goals, the Director must be able to prioritize and manage both independent and collaborative research projects. Additionally, the Director must have the ability to work effectively in a team environment and be able to develop the stakeholder relationships necessary to accomplish project goals. Duties and Responsibilities: * Drives innovation and best practices in the performance of research activities by translating clinical needs and methodology to preclinical research studies performed within the ESS lab. * Provides research expertise, guidance and direct support to Faculty investigators within the Department of Surgery, Medical School, and greater Academic Health Center. * Possesses and implements the knowledge and skills necessary for the successful evaluation of existing and novel medical devices in animal models in translational research. * Develops animal models for the evaluation of commercially available and investigational devices and therapies. * Leads multi-professional and interdepartmental project teams in investigating research questions. * Supervise complex tasks with the aim of facilitating the conduct of research through the optimal implementation and use of equipment and procedural directives. * Manages laboratory operations including budgeting, procurement, staffing, and strategic initiatives contributing to University and laboratory research. * Directs ESS laboratory internal and commercial business and program development. * Expands laboratory research capabilities, capital equipment acquisition and utilization of services by the Academic Health Center, University departments, and external investigators. * Designs research studies to meet the scientific needs of investigators and creates protocols for approval by the IACUC. * Manages laboratory compliance with the University (policies, IACUC), national regulatory bodies (FDA, USDA, AAALAC) international regulatory bodies (EU MDR), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) guidelines and external Quality Assurance units (private and non-profit) * Serves as an independent expert and member of national and international academic societies. * Facilitates inter-departmental communication and collaboration in multi-year, multi-species research projects and strategic initiatives. * Manages departmental research residents to support goals set by DOS Chair. * Supports and assists with the preparation and management of NIH applications by faculty. * Represents laboratory and University research to the public through authorship of peer-reviewed articles and presentations at national and international scientific meetings. * Supervises, t aches and trains general surgical residents using animal models in research projects. Supervision Received: This position reports to the Chair of the Department of Surgery. Operates independently with guidance and oversight from the Chair by exception. Supervision Exercised: This position has the authority to perform or effectively recommend the following actions: hire, suspend, promote, discipline, reward, assign and direct work. Supervises GLP and Non-GLP Study Conduct, Study Directors, Surgeons, Surgical Technicians, Student Laboratory Technician Supervisor and Student Laboratory Technicians. Qualifications Required Qualifications: The Director must have a PhD and at least 10 years of translational surgical research experience. The Director must exhibit technical and operational mastery of cardiac and vascular surgery performed in animal models with a track record of success as documented in the scientific literature. The Director must possess outstanding presentation and teaching skills, and be prepared to conduct training demonstrations and presentations on the use of animal models in translational research. Preferred Qualifications: Master of Business Administration (MBA) with proven record of experience managing a preclinical research laboratory.
