Overview

Fairview is seeking an Emergency Room Technician to join the emergency department at University of MN Medical Center West Bank in Minneapolis, MN. Here are the details of the position:

Position: Emergency Room Technician

Employment Type: Part-time (0.75 FTE, 60 hours per pay period)

Shift: Night shift (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM) with an every third weekend rotation

Compensation:

  • Starting wage of $23.52/hr, with potential increase based on experience

  • Shift differentials: $0.90/hr for evenings, $1.20/hr for nights, and $0.50/hr for weekends

Responsibilities Job Description

Job Summary:

The Emergency Department Technician (EDT) at Fairview plays a crucial role in assisting professional nurses with patient care delivery, maintaining patient rooms, and ensuring efficient operation within the emergency department.

Job Expectations:

Patient Care:

  • Monitor patient vital signs and provide emergency care under the direction of registered nurses (RNs).

  • Assist with various patient care activities as directed by RNs, including but not limited to point of care testing, IV-line setup and discontinuation, enemas, suture removal, restraint application, catheterization, and 12 lead EKG.

  • Transport patients via wheelchair and cart, assist with fitting patients with casts, crutches, immobilizers, and splints.

  • Aid patients in ambulation and positioning, transport medical samples (blood, urine, etc.) as directed.

  • Assist healthcare providers during procedures and specimen collection (e.g., eye lavage, ear irrigation, dressing changes, pelvic exam specimens) following proper techniques.

  • Communicate patient and family observations and concerns promptly to RNs.

  • Respond promptly to patient call lights and requests.

  • Ensure patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality are maintained at all times.

  • Adapt care tasks as appropriate for patients of different ages and developmental stages.

  • Perform CPR and utilize bag/valve mask during resuscitation efforts.

  • Provide patient safety monitoring as assigned and report observations to RNs.

  • Document patient care activities accurately and in a timely manner on nursing records.

  • Coordinate scheduling of tests, lab work, diagnostic tests, appointments, and consultations in collaboration with charge nurses.

Room/Unit Maintenance and Supplies:

  • Restock patient rooms, carts, and oxygen tanks as needed.

  • Assist in cleaning patient rooms between occupants.

  • Complete room and cart checklists to ensure readiness and cleanliness.

Equipment Management:

  • Perform quality control checks on designated equipment, documenting findings.

  • Report equipment discrepancies and malfunctions to RNs promptly.

  • Transport medications as requested from delivery to the Emergency Department or Registered Nurse Medication Room.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in nursing station office areas.

This position requires meticulous attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced emergency department environment. EDTs contribute significantly to patient care delivery and operational efficiency within the healthcare setting.

Qualifications

Required:

License/Certification/Registration:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification required upon hire and must be maintained throughout employment. Ontrack participants must be able to obtain Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification upon completion of the OnTrack program.

  • One or more of the following:

  • Current EMT or ERT certification upon hire (does not need to be maintained throughout employment).

  • Current Paramedic Certification (does not need to be maintained throughout employment).

  • Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire (certification does not need to be maintained throughout employment). Note: Individuals completing a Nursing Assistant program and scheduled to take the NA Registry exam have 90 days post-hire to become active on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry.

  • Current enrollment in an LPN, RN, or Nurse Practitioner program, with completion of at least one semester of clinical rotation within the program.

  • Six months of recent direct patient care experience in an acute care, long-term care, or home care setting (appropriate roles may include Nursing Assistant, PCA, or Resident Assistant).

  • Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program.

  • LPN licensure upon hire (does not need to be maintained throughout employment).

Preferred:

Experience:

  • Previous Emergency Room experience of 1 year or more as an Emergency Room Scribe, paramedic, ERT, EMT, EDT, or ED EMS.

  • Current CNA or NST experience of 1 year or more.

License/Certification/Registration:

  • Paramedic, EMT, ERT, LPN, CNA, PCA.
