Responsibilities Job Description
Genetic counselors in the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory work with a team of molecular genetic pathologists, bioinformaticians, and laboratory technologists to develop and interpret genetic testing for inherited genetic disease.
Key responsibilities in this role include:
Communication with ordering providers about genetic testing including selecting the most appropriate test, specimen requirements, and testing limitations.
Triage of incoming samples to determine the most appropriate testing platform and determining urgency/priority for testing.
Launching bioinformatics pipelines for next generation sequencing data analysis.
Review of genetic data to ensure that appropriate QC parameters are met.
Analysis and interpretation of genomic variants including sequence variants and copy number alterations including review of medical literature and public databases.
Writing clear and concise variant interpretations and variant reports.
Discussion of test results with ordering providers once completed.
Development and validation of new testing methodologies and bioinformatics pipelines.
Participation in training and education of genetic counseling students, molecular genetic pathology fellows, and pathology residents.
Qualifications
Required
Education
- Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling
Experience
- One to Three Years
License/Certification/Registration
- Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Medical Genetics
