PURPOSE/SCOPE:
The Intermediate Machinist is responsible for the successful operation of machining operations and producing quality parts. 2nd and 3rd Shift Machinists will start with the new hire on the job training on first shift for approximately a month and a half before transitioning to their assigned shift.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Set up and operate a variety of machine tools including but not limited to manual lathes, mills, and drill presses, to produce precision parts and instruments
Fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments
Process is easily repeatable, requiring a low amount of troubleshooting and adjustment to yield a quality product
Read engineering blueprints, and measuring devices such as caliper, micrometer, and other gauges used in machining
Focus on continuous improvement. Acts as an agent of change on the shop floor by influencing peers
Set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments
Fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools and maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures
Process requires some troubleshooting and adjustment to build a quality product
Performing tooling and programming prove-outs with manufacturing engineering
Safely set-up and operate a CNC Vertical Machining Center OR CNC Lathe while achieving and maintaining established quality and efficiencies standards
Make parts to meet the requirements of Design and Manufacturing Engineering using proper tooling, inspection equipment and through proper set-up and operation of equipment
Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
H.S. Diploma or Equivalent and Technical degree and 2 or more years of machinist experience
OR
5 or more years machinist experience
Machinist certificate preferred
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
REQUIRED SKILLS:
Safely set-up and operate a CNC Vertical Machining Center OR CNC Lathe while achieving and maintaining established quality and efficiencies standards
Must be able to set-up and operate at least two of the fabrication processes (Radial Drill, Saws, and Single Spindle Drills) while achieving and maintaining established quality and efficiency standards
Make parts to meet the requirements of Design and Manufacturing Engineering using proper tooling, inspection equipment and through proper set-up and operation of equipment
Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments
Applies basic and intermediate level skills.
Moderate comparable complexity of fabrication processes requires a longer training period
Must be proficient with Microsoft Windows, SAP, and Workforce

REQUIRED PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires standing 90% of shift
Frequent bending, twisting, squatting and lifting with arms extended
Must be able to lift up to 45 lbs. The average part weighs 5 - 15 lbs.
Requires good manual dexterity
ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES:
Hearing and vision protection required in all areas
Safety shoes required in all areas
Exposure to oil, grease, dust, metal particles, sparks, sharp-edged materials
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
Exposed to hazards/risks that require body protection (gloves, pants, steel toes, sleeves, safety glasses, etc.)
