Principal Clinical Engineer - Neuromodulation Operating Unit

Position Summary: The Principal Clinical Engineer plays a crucial role on a human-centered design team within the Neuromodulation Operating Unit of Medtronic to develop and deploy innovative medical technologies. Specifically, the person is part of the UX/HF Engineering team, a component of the System Solutions team. The primary responsibilities will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams, leading clinical strategy and testing, and ensuring the integration of clinical insights into product development. This person will be instrumental in driving the clinical experience of our products, validating new features, and ensuring their successful deployment and adoption in the clinical field.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Partner with upstream marketing, clinical research, research & technology, advanced product development, and therapy business leaders to define field challenges and drive respective technological solutions.

  • Collaborate with internal development teams (engineering, regulatory, human factors, quality, marketing) to align and integrate clinical insights.

  • Nurture relationships with key opinion leaders, professional societies, neuromodulation community and the field.

  • Clinically relevant Testing:

  • Support testing of R&D prototypes through realistic scenario definition

  • Simulate real-world use cases to evaluate prototypes and design outputs against customer requirements from the field environment

  • Analyze clinical and post-launch product performance data from the field to drive design inputs into development projects.

  • Burndown clinically-relevant program and technical risk to mature the product through development

  • Develop and validate clinically-relevant algorithms and product features.

  • Plan and execute early iterative-learning cycles or validation activities for successful outcomes in later formal validation activities.

  • Plan and drive iterative assessment of design maturity with HCPs, field reps, and other clinical stakeholders.

  • Provide input to risk management files and evaluate customer satisfaction and system performance through end-user testing.

  • Market and Product Development:

  • Discover unmet needs and review user needs selected for product development

  • Map user needs to system requirements, design specifications and testing protocols

  • Drive clinical workflows into journey maps

  • Define the use cases of the product that focus on the clinical experience as part of the UX team

  • Contribute to clinical evaluation plans and reports throughout the product lifecycle

  • Participate in setting goals and objectives for projects

  • Identify and promote new clinical applications by attending conferences, performing demos, and observing real cases

  • Perform early assessments of device safety and performance and document clinical risks.

  • Contribute to and review regulatory submissions in collaboration with the regulatory team.

  • Business Case and Market Requirements:

  • Define the business case and market requirements to ensure clinical acceptance of the product.

  • Align with marketing on the strategic claims plan and establish clinical claims and performance criteria .

  • Analyze product performance and field issues to derive key performance or clinical requirements.

  • Clinical Knowledge

  • Maintain extensive knowledge of clinical and scientific data for our products and the science behind them.

  • Develop a deep understanding of existing device architectures to effectively represent R&D in the field.

  • Deployment and Training

  • Execute the deployment of alpha/beta software systems or therapy systems into the clinical environment during early tests or early/limited release of products

  • Act as the trainer for the sale representatives and field clinical engineers during product launch

  • Gather issues and work with clinical sites to investigate issues resulting from new product launches.

  • User Interface and User Experience:

  • Review all user interface designs to ensure they meet clinical needs and use cases

  • Provide inputs to the labeling team for manuals, training guides and other documentation

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in biomedical engineering, clinical engineering or a related technical field.

  • At least 7 years of relevant experience, or 5 years of experience with an advanced degree

Nice to have :

  • Understanding the design, operation, and maintenance of medical devices, software and systems, especially class III medical devices

  • Familiarity with healthcare regulations and standards, such as FDA regulations, IEC standards, and ISO standards.

  • Experience working with or within a user experience team or human-centered design team

  • Extensive knowledge of clinical and scientific data related to neuromodulation products (e.g., spinal cord stimulation, deep brain stimulation, therapy drug-delivery or other peripheral/central nervous system modulation)

  • Knowledge of pain or movement disorder market

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively with healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and technicians

  • Skills in relevant software tools for design, simulation, and data analysis

  • Strong communication and leadership skills.

  • Ability to travel up to 25%.

  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting or in an engineering role

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and lead clinical strategy and testing efforts.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$124,800.00 - $187,200.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
