This is a full time position with approximately 50% focused on research and 50% on education. This position will be based in the Sustainable Cropping Systems lab led by Dr. Jake Jungers at the University of Minnesota but will work closely with Dr. Brandon Schlautman at The Land Institute in Salina, KS. This is a hybrid position that will require at least two days per week of in-person work on the UMN St. Paul Campus. Multiple trips to The Land Institute will be expected for meetings and research activities each year. Education - The Teaching Specialist will assist with the development of online courses related to agronomy and agroecology. These courses will be designed for undergraduate students and industry professionals seeking continuing education. The researcher will develop course content and provide technical assistance for the online education platform. The Teaching Specialist will also have the opportunity to teach an existing undergraduate course in the Plant Science major in the fall of 2025. Research - The Teaching Specialist will finalize and implement a phenomic selection model to improve kura clover as a continuous living cover crop in maize production systems in the US Upper Midwest. The Teaching Specialist will use existing data to finalize the model for publication and implementation. The model will then be used to make selections in the greenhouse during the winter of 2024 for field evaluation in 2025. The project will also involve testing and demonstration of a custom inter-row harvester to better manage kura clover and other perennial ground covers in a maize cropping system. The research and education activities should be integrative and preference will be given to candidates who can creatively align these efforts. Specifically, the Teaching Specialist will; * 20% Analyze phenomic data to develop a selection model and peer-reviewed paper. * 20% Apply the phenomic selection model to a kura clover plant breeding program to advance germplasm improvement * 10% Assist with demonstration and outreach related to inter-row harvesting equipment * 15% Apply pedagogical insights to develop novel online education opportunities for a broad range of learners * 15% Assist with the deployment of online course content * 20% Teach an undergraduate course related to plant science Other duties and responsibilities include working with graduate students, mentoring undergraduate students, presenting at conferences, and participating in various outreach and education activities with a broad range of non-science audiences. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Masters degree in agronomy, plant breeding, crop science, plant ecology, or a related field field with degree conferral prior to the start date of the position. Other qualifications include experience in plant breeding, agronomic field trials, statistical analysis using R, evidence of peer-reviewed publication, teaching, and strong writing skills. Applicants should have some experience teaching at the undergraduate level (teaching assistantship experience at minimum) and have a strong desire and interest to teach in this position. Preferred Qualifications: PhD in agronomy, plant breeding, crop science, plant ecology, or a related field before the start date.
