The VP Optum Compensation is accountable for the development of compensation solutions, designed to support Optum’s business growth and to attract and retain our workforce. This role enables Total Rewards to achieve its mission of a globally integrated and competitive pay for performance workforce by collaborating with key global stakeholders across the Enterprise. Provides oversight to Optum’s go-forward pay strategy to improve our overall total rewards position, while also delivering on our core programs with the highest quality.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic vision for Optum’s global compensation philosophies and future compensation programs.

  • Provides leadership and oversight to the Optum compensation team, who are responsible for the strategy, design, development, and deployment of global compensation solutions through analysis, tools, process, client consulting, technology infrastructure, and corporate reporting.

  • Partner closely with the UHG Compensation leadership to advance UHG's Total Rewards Competitiveness across base pay, bonus, equity, benefits, and other key programs (e.g., Physician Compensation).

  • Advance our DEI agenda through aggressive and competitive business driven pay equity strategies that position UHG as an industry leader amongst peers.

  • Partner with executive leaders and the Sr. People team leadership to develop appropriate compensation strategies, policies, programs, and communications.

  • Ensure that the team is business savvy, proactive, responsive and results-oriented.

  • Create a culture that empowers teams, values innovation, emphasizes people and performance management, employee engagement and values diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • Be aware of evolving government influences on management, policies, processes and practices, and work to ensure that the company is compliant with all applicable laws and regulations concerning employment practices, FLSA, etc.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, Finance, or related field; or demonstrated equivalency.

  • Proven ethical leadership with the commitment to lead by example, acting with honesty and integrity, using our values as a foundation.

  • Demonstrated systems thinking across silos, including influencing executives in shaping, and implementing long-term business strategies aligned with people strategies.

  • Experience in problem solving in a fast-paced, rapidly changing, and ambiguous, complex environment.

  • Experience with mergers & acquisitions, including typical processes, leadership assessment, pre-close partnership, and organizational/cultural integration.

  • Experience leading compensation, incentive compensation, and implementing change, while moving with speed to capture opportunities.

  • Experience successfully navigating a highly matrix environment at a large, complex organization, understanding how the different pieces fit together across the enterprise to deliver for the employee and the customer. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain solid relationships across the enterprise.

  • Proven successful consulting and interpersonal agility competencies demonstrated across various types of critical executive stakeholders.

  • Experience demonstrating business fluency and knowledge.

  • Demonstrated competence in inspiring inclusive leadership by championing diversity, developing a solid leadership bench, and inspiring and unlocking the full potential performance in others.

  • Proven analytically incisive by connecting the dots and applying data and analytics to influence decision making and business outcomes.

  • Experience developing and implementing workforce strategies, aligned with, and driving business outcomes.

  • Embodies resilient fighting spirit by showing deep passion around the work and the company’s mission, having restlessness around impact and meaningful change, and demonstrating a shared desire to win.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters in HR/OD or MBA.

  • Physician Compensation strategy and plan design experience.

  • Demonstrated history of positive employee experience through all aspects of People work.

  • Experience working within a global matrixed environment.

  • Experience and expertise in technology, healthcare, insurance, or related industry.

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington residents is $275,000-$325,000 per year. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
