KZMU RADIO Radio Station Manager in MOAB, Utah

Full-time Radio Station Manager needed for a community radio station in Moab, UT.

Starting Salary: $50,000/year

Job Summary

KZMU seeks an energetic, visionary, and community-minded Station Manager to oversee KZMU's growth through impactful programming, community engagement, and fundraising. With broadcast, production, and performance facilities; a large cast of creative volunteer broadcasters; an engaged, supportive board; and a dedicated and talented staff, KZMU's next Station Manager will have the opportunity to lead KZMU into its next chapter as a vital media resource.

The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator who has demonstrated experience in team-building and community engagement; is able to lead, manage and motivate a small staff and a large group of volunteers; can successfully promote KZMU to expand its audience; and has experience with development, with a strong commitment to building and maintaining positive relationships with donors and underwriters. The successful candidate will have the skills, sensitivity, and personal confidence to tap into the power that each member of the team brings to KZMU's mission. While the Station Manager must bring efficient and effective management skills to ensure the productivity of the organization, it is also critical that they be committed to retaining the creative spark that drives the excellence in programming for which KZMU is known, and to leading the station in evaluating and embracing new technologies that continue to change the face of community broadcasting.

The Station Manager will supervise staff and contractors responsible for news reporting, volunteer coordination, development, engineering and bookkeeping. The Station Manager is also the primary liaison between the Board of Trustees and KZMU staff, is responsible for keeping KZMU legal and up to date within FCC, IRS, and DMCA guidelines, and develops and oversees our annual operating budget. The position is based in Moab, Utah, and may require occasional availability on weekends and nights for special events or broadcast issues.

About KZMU

KZMU is a grassroots, community radio station located in the dramatic red rock country of southern Utah. Our home is the small town of Moab, Utah, more than 100 miles from the nearest city. Since 1992, KZMU has truly been an aural oasis in the desert airwaves of southeastern Utah. Local volunteer DJs program our airwaves, along with a small staff. Our public affairs programming includes interviews with community movers and shakers: artists, activists, government officials, scientists and business leaders. We air KZMU News, Democracy Now, Science Moab, and a selection of regional productions. KZMU is also about music---all kinds of music---connecting community members to one another and to the wider world. You can be sure that whatever you hear will be spontaneous, fun and energetic. Indeed, our mission statement is to inform, educate, engage, entertain and connect the communities of Southeastern Utah.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership in planning, implementing, and overseeing KZMU operations, including budget, grants, contracts, records, and personnel.

  • Ensure that the facilities and equipment are maintained and operational.

  • Work closely with the Development Coordinator (new position to be filled) and other staff  to plan, implement, and oversee fundraising efforts, including underwriting, bi-annual fund drives, donor programs, grant writing/reporting, special events, and other critical fundraising elements. .

  • Ensure compliance with FCC and other legal requirements.

  • Seek to in crease listenership by providing  vision and oversight to the staff and volunteers to ensure high-quality programming, including syndicated and KZMU-produced programs. 

  • Util ze radio listenership data, community and public feedback, and audience research and information to validate and/or modify programming when necessary.

  • Promote KZMU and nurture its role in the community by developing and fostering positive relationships with staff, volunteers, listeners and supporters, underwriters, community leaders, and local business and organizations.

  • Attend monthly Board of Trustee meetings and provide program and financial reports so that the Board has the information necessary to make informed strategic and budgetary decisions. Advise the Board and implement approved policies and strategic direction.

  • Serve as the primary contact with regional and national community radio stations and networks, and seek opportunities for collaboration or resource-sharing. 

  • Facility management (oversight of building maintenance, utilities, contractors).

Qualifications
  • Experience in nonprofit management or program oversight (preferably public radio or other community-based media). 

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and manage personnel.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide variety of people and interests, including the ability to incorporate diverse interests and opinions into decision-making, and devise successful collaborations.

  • Ability to plan and oversee creative projects and initiate/support change through collaboration with staff and volunteers.

  • Experience with and ability to understand and manage a budget. Familiarity with non-profit accounting principles and database management.

  • Strong writing, speaking, and public presentation skills necessary to represent KZMU successfully to the community, donors, regulatory agencies, and other collaborators. 

  • Experience in fundraising activities such as grant writing, donor/member program management, and/or event coordination.

  • Organized and high competency with standard desktop software applications.

Other Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
  • Experience in radio broadcasting operations and management.

  • Knowledge of FCC regulations applicable to radio broadcasting and Center for Public Broadcasting grant requirements.

  • General technical knowledge applicable to working with radio technology and an ability to readily learn and adapt to new systems and technologies.

  • Radio/audio program production, journalism, or engineering.

  • Experience with or knowledge of website management and use of web-based resources and social media for communications and promotion.   

  • Familiarity with utilization of new media technology for program development and/or organizational communication and development;

Physical Demands 
  • Mobility to work in a standard office environment, use standard office equipment and attend off-site meetings.

  • Occasional heavy lifting of sound equipment, etc.
