U.S. Coast Guard Technical Writer (Aviation), GS-1083-11 in Mobile, Alabama

Summary This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, Force Readiness Command (FORCECOM), Performance Systems Division, Aviation Training Center in Mobile, AL. Responsibilities The incumbent will perform duties as Technical Writer in the Training Division at the U.S. Coast Guard Aviation Training Center (ATC), Mobile, AL. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as Technical Writer in support of researching, developing, and revising Coast Guard Aviation publications to include aircraft flight manuals, check lists, supplements, and operator's manuals such as performance, weight and balance, cargo loading, and sensors/C4ISR manuals. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Producing publication and manuals using Coast Guard enterprise desktop publishing software and applications Researching, developing, maintaining and updating materials for aviation publications Conducting extensive research of various types of data derived from OEM handbooks (e.g. Pilot's Operating Handbooks), and existing Coast Guard regulations and policies Developing or refining check lists, supplements, job aids, and other highly specialized operating manuals Ensuring that material is approved as required, and delivered via electronic or printed means Requirements Conditions of Employment This position requires a Secret clearance. U.S. Citizenship is required. Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service. A one-year probationary period may be required. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. This includes Time-In-Grade requirements for current status employees applying through merit promotion procedures. Status applicants applying for a promotion must have 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade. Qualifications Applicants must possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Specialized experience includes knowledge in regulations and policies affecting Government publications, in applying principles, techniques, and practices of technical and general writing, editing, English grammar and composition, spelling and punctuation; develops written products that articulate, interpret, and explain complex operations and programs; analyzing, interpreting and integrating information in a variety of formats, such as graphs and tables, databases, and spreadsheets, and to plan and implement new formats and products suitable for new media and accessible to specialized audiences; knowledge of professional authoring and desktop publishing software tools including Microsoft Word and Adobe Framemaker. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education This position does not have a positive education requirement.
