The Senior Certified Ophthalmic Assistant is an advanced-level position including a wide variety of clerical, technical, and patient related functions under minimal supervision. The Senior COA performs all of the duties of the associate level ophthalmic technician with greater independence, including clinic flow management, patient check-in; medical record review, preparation for the visit, patient education, assistance with medical examinations, treatments, and procedures, coordination and scheduling of tests, appointments, and surgeries, coordination of area work assignments, protocol review and update, and quality assurance checks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS IF HIRED PRIOR TO APRIL 1, 2022: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. High school diploma or equivalent required. 2. Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant obtained through JCAHPO required upon hire. 3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date. EXPERIENCE: 1. Two (2) years' experience as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.

  1. Assigns duties and coordinates clinical services.
  2. Keeps informed of special physician orders concerning patients.
  3. Investigates and resolves complaints or refers unusual problems to supervisor.
  4. Responds to patient teaching opportunities to enhance patient compliance and safety.
  5. Identify family involvement in patient compliance.
  6. Participates in problem solving and decision making in the clinic. Acts to ensure staffing and patient needs are met.
  7. Obtain and record accurate patient histories to include chief complaint, present ocular status, ocular history, family history, past and present medical history, medications and allergies, and vital signs if needed.
  8. Obtain and accurately record visual acuity measurements on adults, children, illiterate patients and infants.
  9. Accurately measure and record spectacle prescriptions, using both manual and automated devices.
