Honeywell Sr R&D Manager in Morris Plains, New Jersey

We are seeking a Senior Technical Manager of R&D Engineering to define and drive the next generation of research, development, and maturation of technologies in support of advanced materials and coatings specifically relevant to aerospace applications. Product applications include High Temperature and High Wear Resistance Coatings for a wide range of product applications including gas turbine engines, high temperature electrical devices, and hypersonic components.

This role is located in Morris Plains, New Jersey. The Senior Technical Manager collaborates closely with Director level leadership and maintains a strong network of technical contacts at our customers, government agencies, research labs, universities, and Honeywell global engineering centers. Career growth and advancement is enabled by partnering with Product Offering Directors, the Technology Strategy & Innovation organization, Chief Engineers, and Fellows to develop technology roadmaps, pursuit plans, and partnership opportunities. The Senior Technical Manager understands the strategic needs of the enterprise, identifies and evaluates relevant technologies, and collaborates across multiple locations to deliver mature, risk-reduced technologies to the Engineering Center of Excellence on schedule for incorporation into products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead 8+ direct reports (4+ with PhD) at the Morris Plains NJ site in innovation, development, scale up, and manufacturing readiness of technologies and products involving advanced materials and coatings.

  • Technology applications include gas turbine engine components; high temperature and high wear/corrosion/oxidation resistant coatings; carbon-carbon composite systems for thermal management; and hypersonic material systems.

  • Annual Budget responsibility $5M including technology project portfolio + capital projects + department expense.

  • Drive collaboration across Aerospace and the Honeywell Strategic Business Groups (SBGs), and lead technology development projects to Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL6) and Manufacturing Readiness Level 6 (MRL6).

  • Perform as the Aerospace representative in support of the: site leader, facilities leader, and safety leader.

  • Must lead and operate in a safety-first manner. Instill this mindset in the team and culture.

  • Support a multimillion-dollar portfolio of technology development programs that are funded internally, externally, or through cost-share contracts.

  • Develop a robust pursuit pipeline and win external contracts each year valued at $1M+ in total effort that are aligned with roadmaps and business strategies.

  • Meet the Annual Operating Plan (AOP) for engineering revenue, recovery, IR&D investment (“RDE”), capital investment, and schedule milestones.

  • Define and drive a management operating system that ensures department and project performance in alignment with internal and external stakeholder requirements.

  • Attract, develop, and retain diverse top talent to enable a high-performing innovative team using tools including: Management Resource Review (MRR), Technical Resource Review (TRR), pay-for-performance differentiation based on results and behaviors, bi-annual performance reviews, progression & salary planning processes, and acting on Voice Of Employee survey feedback.

  • Responsible for managing resource demand & capacity, staffing the department effectively, identifying & leading cross-department initiatives, and defining a Global Strategic Framework

  • Collaborate with the Technology Strategy group, Chief Engineers, Fellows, and Business Enterprise teams to develop technology roadmaps with linkage to product roadmaps, strategic plans (STRAP), customer pursuits, and platform insertion targets.

  • Comprehension of the technology capabilities and business objectives with the ability to interact with customers and stakeholders at a senior management leadership level up to Vice Presidents

  • Identify and engage with key strategic partners including academic institutions to bring technologies and talent back to Honeywell.

  • Persuade internal and external parties to accept new concepts, practices, and approaches.

  • Must be positive and proactive, supportive of company goals and objectives, supportive of other members of the management team, tolerate ambiguity, and effectively work in a fast paced, agile environment.

  • Travel required: 10%, mostly US domestic.

You Must Have

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (or related field) with an emphasis in Materials, Chemistry, Mechanical, or Aerospace.

  • 6+ years of experience in technology development & application, or new product development.

  • 4+ years of experience managing personnel as direct reports.

  • Proven track record of technical leadership and project management

  • Able to qualify for a US security clearance.

  • Able to work in a Honeywell office 5 days per week.
