Job Title Student Assistant (Work Study) (Museum Asst)

General Description

This is a work-study student position responsible for assisting in the operations and activities of the Stone Fort Museum. Responsible for serving as facility manager on weekends and during absence of the curator. Works under general supervision with a high degree of personal responsibility and initiative.

Job Duties

  1. Performs guard duties and exhibit docent duties for visitors in a two-story historic structure without handicap access to the second floor.

  2. Assists in management of artifact collection located in second floor storage.

  3. Implementation of departmental activities with on-site and off-site educational programs.

  4. Performs general custodial functions such as sweeping, mopping and rest room maintenance using chemical cleaning agents as appropriate.

  5. Performs garden maintenance including trimming, watering, weeding, fertilizing and refuse removal tasks.

  6. Operates manual tools and equipment including hand tools, garden shears, shovels, rakes and garden hoses.

  7. Performs store clerk functions including cash register sales.

  8. Receives payments from students and others for departmentally sponsored activities.

  9. Provides office assistance to the department by assisting staff in routine clerical duties and responsibilities.

  10. Provides assistance in answering phone calls, routing incoming calls, taking messages, greeting visitors, and directing visitors to appropriate staff member.

  11. Assists in file and records maintenance.

  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  13. Desire to learn and participate in research, interpretation and educational activities of a historical structure and associated garden.

  14. Knowledge of general office and clerical procedures and concepts.

  15. Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records and files.

  16. Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.

  17. Ability to understand and follow instructions.

    Required Qualifications

The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.

No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided.

A student must be awarded and accept a “Work-Study Permit” for each semester the student will be working.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience creating digital content using Adobe Creative Cloud apps including Photoshop, InDesign and Premiere.

  2. Experience in public speaking.

  3. Experience in event management.

    Physical Demands

Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties, including:

  1. Climbing stairs, bending, squatting, and lifting.

  2. Standing for extended periods.

  3. Perform work in varying environmental conditions including summer heat, winter cold, wind, rain, and humidity.

    Special Conditions for Eligibility

A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.

Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.

Work Schedule REQUIRED: Must be available to work some weekends, including Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 1-5pm. Schedule includes evening and weekend events. Normal work week 10-20 hours to be arranged. Museum open hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 1-5pm.

Min Pay Rate $8.50/hr
