Position Summary:

Prepare students to meet the standards for firefighters set forth by the current National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001: Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications that may lead to several certifications by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and the State of Idaho Fire Service Technology (FST). Also, prepare students to meet the standards for candidate firefighters set forth by the current NFPA 1582: Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments for the physical fitness requirements that must be met in order to pass the Firefighter Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). This teaching position requires the incumbent to be available throughout the semester to teach as required.

Essential Functions:

• Provide instruction to students in preparation to pass both written and practical skills

examinations administered by the College, State, and any appropriate Certification or

Accreditation Entity (e.g., NFPA, IFSAC, FST). This may include, but is not limited to the

student learning outcomes listed in their skills sheet:

o Locating information in Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) Standard Operating

Procedures (SOPs) and Codes.

o Correctly don and activate the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) in full

protective clothing; use controlled breathing techniques and perform emergency

procedures in event of SCBA failure; demonstrate SCBA Air Conservation; and

properly inspect, clean, and sanitize SCBA.

o Demonstrate proper use, care, and inspection of fire extinguishers, tools, ropes,

hoists, ladders, hoses, pump-hydrant connections, salvage equipment, and other

equipment.

o Conduct various forms of search and various forms of exit.

o Force entry through a door, window, and wall.

o Perform a rescue utilizing a ladder.

o Perform horizontal ventilation and vertical ventilation.

o Advance, reload, deploy, extend, and repair an attack line.

o Attack, manage, and extinguish a vehicle fire, Class A materials fire, ground cover

fire, and interior fire.

o Secure building utilities, overhaul a fire scene, deploy salvage cover, and perform

property conservation.

o Explain the importance of keeping up on new standards, technology, tactics, and

science in the field of firefighting and evaluating outcomes.

• Understand the importance of having and maintaining physical fitness in order to

effectively perform the duties required in a firefighting career. Provide and prepare the

students with the information, tools, and knowledge to keep up to date with current tactical

practices, national standards, and future advancements in the field of firefighting.

• Prepare students on how they fit into the para-military organization of a fire department as

a new firefighter, how to successfully fit into the diverse culture of the Fire Service, and

understand their value to the organization.

• Prepare students on how to approach the diversity of the work that a firefighter faces by

using problem-solving skills to identify numerous ways to complete tasks with resources

available, reflect on outcomes and suggest improvement plans, and take on challenges

tasks to create effective systems and programs.

• Demonstrated ability to perform the aerobic conditioning, strength training, and

biomechanics are required for the eight events of the Firefighter CPAT as needed.

• Conduct and certify students in standard and emergency procedures pertinent to fire

service technology.

• Adheres to life skills curriculum established by the program in coordination with student

assessment requirements of state and federal funding sources.

• Takes primary responsibility for retaining students assigned to their class, following

established guidelines for contacting students.

• Records student attendance and tracks student outcomes.

• Assists with registration and testing if requested.

• Attends staff meetings and training as assigned.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• 5 years of recent, documented field experience in fire service technology.

• Proven practical experience and certification to teach the majority of the NFPA 1001,

NFPA 1582, IFSAC, and FST approved and required course materials.

• Documented experience in a variety of fire service technology career fields preferred.

• Specific teaching experience in NFPA 1001, NFPA 1582, IFSAC, and FST at a fire

department academy is preferred.

• Ability to lift 75 lbs.
