Position Description

This Recreation Leader position is part-time non-Civil Service with the Metro Parks and Recreation Department and is responsible for planning, organizing, and conducting aquatic and/or recreational or sports activities.

Applicants must be able to work with diverse populations and be available to work in any location.

The work locations for these positions are often in inner-city areas and require working evenings and some weekends. This classification works in both an indoor and outdoor environment.

Metro's Parks and Recreation Department has something for everyone through its variety of strategically placed facilities and programs. Parks offers cultural arts and fitness classes, dog parks and nature programs and 16,000 acres of open space, including 121 parks and 19 greenways. Ice hockey, sports leagues, art galleries and much more are among the offerings. Parks is a fun place where there's always something going on.

This list will be used to fill vacancies as they occur in Community Centers for both Aquatic & non-Aquatic positions throughout Metro Parks and Recreation.

Typical Duties

  • Lead various groups in indoor/outdoor recreation and sports activities.

  • Coach team sports.

  • Develop and lead games and activities for patrons of all ages and abilities.

  • Provide front desk services including greeting customers, answering phones, collecting fees, receipting admissions and other operational revenue using a computer point of sale system, and checking out recreational equipment.

  • Assist with maintaining order and enforcing discipline procedures.

  • Keep records pertaining to attendance, programs, etc.

  • Administer basic first aid in cases of minor injury.

  • Transport patrons and/or chaperone children on special outings.

  • Perform various repairs, maintenance and housekeeping duties to ensure high standards of facility cleanliness and operational equipment.

  • Take reservations and registration for programs.

  • Provide public with information as requested.

  • Submit request for equipment and repairs.

For Aquatic positions, in addition to the above duties:

  • Perform standard life guarding duties for swimmers using community pools and swimming areas.

  • Maintain Pools in accordance with Federal, State, and local regulations which include maintaining pool water chemistry, cleaning locker rooms, operating pressure washer, vacuuming and backwashing pools, cleaning pool area, emptying trash, repairing swim meet timing equipment, etc.

  • Organize, set up and operate Swim Meets utilizing Colorado Time Systems.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

For Recreation Centers

High School Diploma or equivalent and some experience coaching, organizing, or supervising recreational activities.

For Aquatics

Candidate must have a current Lifeguard Training Certification.

NOTE Those candidates not possessing a current American Red Cross lifeguard training certification must obtain within six (6) months of appointment. The Parks Department will assist with obtaining ARC certification.

LICENSE REQUIRED:

Valid Driver License

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for this classification must be physically able to participate in recreational activities involving walking, running, swimming, bending, stooping, etc.

NOTE: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with Metropolitan Government.
