Position Summary/Description:

A Sign-On Bonus of $3,000 is available for the successful applicant to be paid in the first month on university payroll. This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Human Resources (HR) Consultant position provides professional consultation in human resources best practices that support the organization in achieving stated business and strategic goals and objectives. The HR Consultant functions as a generalist covering the broad range of human resources subject matter areas including classification and compensation, recruitment and hiring, employee relations, performance management, training and development, wage hour and leave administration, and benefits. This is a position of high responsibility that includes policy interpretation and application of policies; program administration and program development and working directly with managers and senior leadership to identify, address, and resolve issues. This position requires a high level of technical knowledge and independent decision making. The role requires an excellent communicator with the ability to establish strong professional relationships with a diverse and sometimes challenging client group, excellent diplomatic and firm behaviors for legal compliance, collaboration with clients on consistent policy interpretation, and thorough knowledge of HR infrastructure and industry best practices for streamlining operations. Partnerships with the University’s Office of Human Resources, Academic Personnel, Payroll, EOC , and various Student Affairs’ committees/boards are also critical to resolve problems and situations viably and efficiently. The position may research, facilitate, negotiate, develop, and document innovative solutions to human resources issues tailored to the requirements of the client and the organization. Confidentiality is an essential expectation of the position.

The primary areas of responsibility for this position include: Office of the Vice Chancellor, Dean of Students, University Career Services, Campus Y, Student Affairs Information Technology, Student Wellness, Student Conduct, Off-Campus Student Life, Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services, LGBTQ Center, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Carolina Union, Campus Health, Counseling and Psychological Services ( CAPS ), and Student Affairs Development. This role provides cross-coverage in the absence of other HR staff in Student Affairs.

Education and Experience:

Experience on boarding large student workforce population.

Prior work experience in a shared services model

Preference for an experienced candidate who has knowledge and expertise concerning the policies and procedures relating to UNC -Chapel Hill Human Resources to include classification and compensation, employee/management relations, recruitment and hiring, leave/payroll administration, employee benefits and performance management.

Experience with UNC human resources systems ( RASR , Kronos/ TIM , PeopleSoft/ConnectCarolina, PeopleAdmin, LawLogix, Affiliate Request System, PAAT Transactions, Fund Swaps and Online Background Check Process), and two years of progressively responsible experience interpreting, applying, communicating, and promoting HR best practices.

*Thorough knowledge of UNC policies and procedures for both SHRA and EHRA positions.

Must be flexible and possess the ability to easily adapt to change.

Must be able to maintain high level of confidentiality with professionalism and discretion.

Must have the ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships.

Must have the ability to work independently with minimal guidance on multiple HR-related functions.

Must have proficient computer skills and have working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook & PowerPoint).

*Must be able to make recommendations and improvements related to HR processes and workflow.
