The Position

Accounting Assistants perform clerical accounting work in the maintenance of accounts and accounting records for State agencies.

PER EXECUTIVE ORDER 2023-11, ALL MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS HAVE BEEN WAIVED FOR THIS POSITION UNTIL JUNE 30th, 2024. Please refer to the link for more information: https://gov.nv.gov/Newsroom/ExecOrders/2023/Executive_Order_2023-011/ Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. Accounting Assistants supervise and participate in the performance of clerical accounting functions in the maintenance of various accounts and records. Incumbents prepare and process accounts receivable and payable documents; review accounting system reports for accuracy and make corrections; and prepare various internal reports. Incumbents perform complex payroll duties involving overtime, call-back, shift differential, standby pay, requests for hand typed checks, special pay, and workers' compensation buybacks. These incumbents rely on a variety of accounting processes, rules, regulations, and controls to manage the various accounts. Incumbents gather and extract data from a variety of internal/external sources; resolve conflicting financial and statistical data; prepare detailed supporting documentation for grants and related reports; reconcile complex bank statements; maintain records and balances for general ledger categories; process accounts payable/receivable documents; and assign accounting codes in accordance with complex rules, regulations, contracts, and grant requirements.

Work Shift: Typically, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but extended hours and overtime may be required on short notice in cases of emergency. Experience or Training: Incumbents must have detailed knowledge of current practices and principles of accounting. These individuals must be able to interpret and apply a myriad of rules, regulations, and policies/procedures relative to various programs and accounts; develop financial and statistical reports; interpret the applicability of regulations/guidelines and policies. Incumbent must be proficient in the operation of various office machines/equipment. Experience in a correctional facility preferred. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of clerical accounting experience which must have included duties such as coding documents to distribute funds; preparing accounts payable and accounts receivable documents and balancing accounts; and using computer spreadsheets to record, track organize and report data; OR one year of experience as an Accounting Assistant I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Special Requirements

A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
