The Port of New Orleans (PORTNOLA) is a diverse deep-water port uniquely located on the Mississippi River near the Gulf of Mexico. PORTNOLA is seeking aMobile Equipment Operator 2/Heavy. This position serves as a Piledriver in facilitating piledriver operations and maintenance as part of the Fendering department.

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred or required to obtain within 12 months of employment.

Starting salary depends upon qualifications:

$22.52/hr. to $31.53/hr.

VACANCY QUALIFIES FOR $1.50/hr. PREMIUM PAY

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Three years of experience in mobile equipment operations.

NOTE:

May be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver's license or commercial driver's license.

Job Concepts

Function of Work:

To operate heavy mobile equipment to accomplish transportation, maintenance, or construction tasks.

Level of Work:

Advanced.

Supervision Received:

General from a Foreman, or other higher level maintenance supervisory or administrative personnel.

Supervision Exercised:

Functional over lower graded equipment operations or laboring personnel, as needed.

Location of Work:

Levee Districts; Ports; Terminal Districts; Department of Wildlife and Fisheries; Department of Natural Resources; Office of Forestry; Department of Health and Human Resources; or other agencies throughout the state requiring the regular operation of very heavy mobile equipment.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from Heavy Mobile Equipment Operator 1 by the requirement for operation of large mobile cranes, draglines, pile drivers, or locomotives as the primary, regular and recurring function of the job.

Differs from Foreman and other supervisory jobs by the requirement that actual operation of heavy equipment, rather than full-time supervision, constitutes the major function of the job.

Examples of Work

Mobile Equipment Operator 2/Heavy (Piledriving Operations)

This position is in the Fendering department of the Port of New Orleans Maintenance Division and reports directly to the Port Facility Maintenance Foreman.

This position serves as a Port of New Orleans, Piledriver in facilitating piledriving operations and maintenance as part of the Fendering department.

This position participates in the required PORT training program and obtains additional training in order to facilitate the efficient performance duties and/or required task. This is a safety sensitive position that requires random drug screening throughout the year.

The incumbent must acquire and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within the first 12 months of employment. Failure to meet this requirement will result in separation of employment. The incumbent will be required to be knowledgeable and capable of the safe operation of various types of equipment required to fulfill the needs of the position and the PORT. The incumbent shall utilize a telephone, cell phone, two-way communication device, computer, and email to facilitate communication if required. The incumbent is required to be able to perform duties many times without direct supervision and be knowledgeable enough to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise.

75% EQUIPMENT OPERATION: Includes, but not limited to operates 30-ton piledriver crane, 30-ton hydraulic boom truck, and 4-ton forklift to provide heavy lifts for the Piledriver, Dredge, Cruise Terminal and all other departments of the Port as needed. Operates front end loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, excavators.

10% GUIDANCE: Includes, but not limited to provide guidance to piledrivers during piledriver operators under the supervision of the Piledriver Foreman.

10% REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE: Includes, but not limited to makes minor repairs and performs daily maintenance on equipment necessary to keep equipment in good working order.

5% OTHER DUTIES, INCLUDING EMERGENCY SUPPORT: The incumbent is required to perform a variety of tasks and assignments, as directed by the Supervisor, necessary to fulfill the mission of the Fendering Department and/or Port Maintenance Division.
