Title: Assistant Controller, Financial Risk & Internal Controls

Location: Midtown

Exemption Status: Exempt

Salary Range: $168,800.00 - $187,900.00

*As required under NYC Human Rights Law Int 1208-2018 - Salary range for this role when Hired for NYC Offices

Position Summary

Position is responsible for evaluating and monitoring the financial related internal control systems, identifying risks, and recommending measures to mitigate those risks. Role will work to foster standardization and consistency across business process and financial related internal controls and build automated processes for monitoring where possible.

Job Responsibilities

  • Actively seek standardization and automation and implement best practices for managing and monitoring financial related internal controls

  • Deploy innovative technology where possible to enhance and continuously improve the design and operating effectiveness of the controls, documentation, assessment, and review procedures.

  • Identify potential risks, control deficiencies, and recommend appropriate actions to mitigate these risks.

  • Perform detailed testing procedures to assess the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.

  • Prepare detailed reports, highlighting findings, recommendations, and opportunities for process improvements

  • Collaborate with stakeholders from various departments to foster a culture of compliance and risk management.

  • Monitor and track the implementation of recommendations.

  • Collaborate with Deputy Controllers to plan, coordinate and execute all financial and operational audits by external auditors.

  • Coordination of external reporting requests for information and survey preparation.

  • Oversee accounting and reporting for compliance matters.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance or Business Administration

Experience

  • A relevant professional certification (e.g., CPA, CIA) required.

  • 6+ years of proven experience in conducting internal and/or external audits, preferably within the Higher Education field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience and interest for how technology and systems can support internal control effectiveness and efficiency.

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, regulations, and auditing standards.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to analyze complex financial data and interpret results accurately.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including sound presentational skills.

  • Striving for continuous improvement and optimization.

  • Ability to work well independently as well as the ability to collaborate well with stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated supervisory/management skills.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) Preferred

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Required
