What You’ll Be Doing

The Associate will be responsible for supporting

  1. Primary Market Business: the origination, structuring and distribution of underwritten and arranged syndicated credits within identified industry portfolios in the corporate bank’s loan portfolio in the US and

  2. Secondary Market Business: coverage of >200 commercial bank as well as numerous non-bank investors in the loan market to facilitate purchases and sales for the bank’s portfolio, enhancing capital efficiency and maximizing loan portfolio profitability.

Analysis of the financial markets generally and loan markets specifically, financing trends, deal database management, investor database management, and other related subjects will be key to the Associate’s daily duties, as will contributing to client pitches and internal presentations and internal as well as external reporting.

The Associate will participate in the development and execution of overall business strategies.

The Associate will be flexible to work hours as needed to help deliver a great client experience, which may include evenings and weekends. Business Unit Description

Loan Syndications (“LSG”) US includes syndicate and sales functions and is CIBC’s face to the loan market, providing (i) market information , (ii) investor coverage and (iii) arranging, underwriting and distribution capabilities in order to serve CIBC clients’ capital raising needs.

Syndicate : LSG provides loan market and deal-specific analysis and advice to (i) facilitate CIBC’s loan investment decision making, (ii) mitigate market risk when providing underwritings, (iii) enhance risk-adjusted returns on capital and (iv) support capital rotation.

Distribution: LSG maintains strong relationships with loan market investors globally and distributes all CIBC-originated loans in the primary market. Through its secondary market execution capabilities, LSG is a (i) provider of liquidity and capital relief, (ii) sourcer of new business opportunities and (iii) facilitator of active portfolio management. LSG facilitates secondary market information flow and executes purchases and sales.

These activities support CIBC's leading position in the loan markets as an advisor and debt arranger for core clients, both for corporate and structured financings. The objective of these activities is to mitigate market risk and enhance risk-adjusted returns on capital and facilitate active portfolio management, optimizing execution in the market for CIBC and its clients.

LSG’s strong investor relationships are an integral part of the “cross-sell value chain”, adding to the bank’s capability to underwrite and lead financings (the originate-to-distribute strategy), providing deeper client penetration and the ability to pursue additional fee opportunities across products and geographies.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Researching and monitoring primary and secondary loan market trends including structural and price trends, investor behavior and other financial market metrics and incorporate same into financing proposals for issuers as well as communicate these effectively both to internal and external clients

  • Researching and monitoring client-/borrower- as well as industry-specific credit and business trends both for structuring new loan proposals and client pitches as well as for responding to investor due diligence questions, both in primary distribution and for secondary market sales

  • For loan underwritings , the Associate supports the creation of a situation appropriate market risk analysis (the Loan Underwriting Committee Assessment), including supporting data, liquidity analysis, comparable transaction analysis, an analysis of prevailing market conditions, helping craft risk mitigation strategies and distribution options for achieving CIBC’s Sell-Down Target

  • Reviewing information memoranda, proposals and presentations, helping prepare new business (“Global Deals Committee”) memos and underwriting proposals

  • Maintaining databases of loans and loan investors and ongoing contact with loan investors

  • Supporting the organization and management of deal launches, bank meetings and marketing events

  • During primary distribution phases of syndications, helping research and answer investor questions

  • During secondary closing processes, supporting the timely and efficient closing of purchases and sales

Who You Are

  • Degree in Economics, Accounting, Finance or related field

  • Minimum 3 years related experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of capital markets, investment banking, private/public debt and equity capital markets, trade finance, foreign exchange, commercial paper, securitization and financial products

  • Well-developed knowledge of corporate credit, experience in analyzing credit proposals and modeling, excellent understanding of financial statements and accounting principles

  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills, foreign languages a plus

  • Excellent presentation skills, ability to create and maintain good relationships with clients and market peers

  • Ability to work in a results oriented team, centered on clients

  • Able to deal professionally with complexity under tight deadlines

  • Well-developed organizational skills in order to respond to shifting priorities on several simultaneous projects

  • Ability to operate Microsoft Office software, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Speaking up if witnessing behaviors that drive poor or unfair outcomes for clients, team members or other stakeholders

  • Escalating matters that can result in adverse market practices and outcomes, thereby negatively impacting CIBC’s reputation as a leading financial institution

At CIBC, we offer a competitive total rewards package. This role has an expected salary range of $150,000-$170,000 for the New York, NY market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position. The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which also may include a discretionary bonus component.
