POSITION DETAILS

CUNY Comprehensive Access to Resources for Essential Services (CUNY CARES) is a pilot program designed to demonstrate and evaluate a new approach to integrated, comprehensive, student-centered health and social services for 30,000 students attending CUNY’s three Bronx campuses: Lehman, Bronx Community, and Hostos Community Colleges. Based on the results of this three-year pilot program (2022-2025), successful elements will be extended to all 25 CUNY campuses. CUNY CARES is led by the CUNY Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs with additional technical support and guidance from the CUNY Dean for Health and Human Services and the faculty director of Healthy CUNY.

The CUNY Cares Housing Specialist will develop and lead housing support services for CUNY students at Bronx Community, Hostos Community, and Lehman College as part of the CUNY CARES Bronx Demonstration Project. CUNY CARES is based in the CUNY Offices of Student Affairs and co-sponsored by CUNY’s Office of Academic Affairs and Healthy CUNY; a university-wide initiative based at the CUNY School of Public Health. CUNY CARES seeks to link CUNY students to health, mental health, food security, housing, and other essential services in order to improve their wellbeing and academic success.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Assessment

  • Create an inventory of all housing support services that CUNY now provides to students at the three Bronx campuses and assess the strengths and weaknesses of each.

  • In consultation with Bronx campus resource centers, describe the services, create an inventory of, and assess the strengths and weaknesses of all community-based housing programs with which campuses interact.

  • Identify other community and city-based partners to develop enhanced housing support services for CUNY students facing housing instability and select a few organizations as priorities for partnerships.

  • Collaborate with Healthy CUNY faculty and staff, the CUNY CARES Project Evaluator, and the CUNY Office of Institutional Research to collect and synthesize available data on the number of CUNY Bronx students facing various levels of housing instability.

Service Planning, Training and Delivery

  • Convene a Bronx CUNY CARES Housing Support Workgroup to include staff and students from three Bronx campuses to develop a multi-year work plan for implementation of housing

  • support services and partnerships with Bronx campuses.

  • Within three months of beginning the position, organize workshops, educational sessions, and develop educational materials aimed at aiding students experiencing housing instability to access appropriate assistance.

  • Identify two or more nonprofit or government partners who can collaborate with CUNY CARES to develop new housing opportunities for CUNY students facing housing instability.

  • Provide training and technical assistance to other programs at the three Bronx campuses that seek to enhance or add housing support services.

Other

  • Assists the CUNY CARES Evaluator to document housing needs and efforts to meet them.

  • Serves as liaison for CUNY CARES with city and nonprofit housing groups.

  • Assist with preparing funding requests for additional support for housing assistance in collaboration with other CUNY CARES staff and leaders.

NOTE:

Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and on-site in the office.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum

Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in urban planning, student services, social work, or a related discipline.

  • At least three years’ experience providing housing and other support to low-income young adults.

  • Strong interpersonal, communications, and problem-solving skills.

  • Knowledge of the CUNY system and experience working in low income, immigrant, Black or Latinx communities, especially in the Bronx, is highly desirable.

  • Proficiency in Spanish is desirable.

  • Administers one or more student affairs programs, providing program management, assistance with policy development, supervision and training of all professional and support staff, budget monitoring, and report preparation

  • Serves as a resource to student groups and/or populations as a consultant and advocate for their concerns

  • Researches and stays current on higher education programs, trends, and issues with student impact

  • Produces workshops and materials to support student programs; manages on-line communities; develops on-line social networking activities, and develops and maintains multimedia content on program web sites

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The salary range is $70,238 - $82,928 ; commensurate with qualifications, education, and experience.
