Job Title: Request for Consideration - Detective, Applicant Investigation and Processing Unit

Dept/Div: MTA Police Department

Supervisor: Detective-Sergeant, Applicant Investigation and Processing Unit

Location: 420 Lexington Avenue , New York, NY 10170

Hours: Four (4) consecutive tours of ten hours, 16 minutes

Summary:

The department is seeking qualified members from the rank of Police Officer/Detective who are interested in being assigned to the Applicant Investigation and Processing Unit.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive background investigations for both sworn Police Officer positions and civilian positions with the MTA Police Department

  • Conduct Panel Interviews to include dictating questions, accurately capturing candidate responses, and recording results.

  • Prepare Summary Background Reports and Disqualification recommendations as directed by Unit Supervision.

  • Respond to the personal residence of potential candidates and conduct adequate residence checks of the residence and surrounding neighborhood.

  • Liaise with Law Enforcement Agencies across the Federal, Local, and State enterprise to ascertain candidate status with said agencies and any relevant interactions.

  • Attend recruitment events and act a representative for the MTA Police Department and as an advocate for potential employment opportunities with the department.

  • Maintain an investigative caseload as assigned by unit supervision and adhere to deadlines imposed to meet hiring goals.

  • Collaborate with Human Resources Staff to assist in all steps of pre-employment hiring.

  • Attend Physical Fitness Testing often scheduled beyond that of regular business hours.

  • Embrace emerging trends and efforts in Police Recruitment and Retention and stay abreast of best practices to ensure an efficient and effective hiring process.

    Qualifications:

    Qualified Candidates must, at a minimum, have the following qualifications/requirements to be considered for appointment:

  • Five (5) years of Police experience with the MTA Police Department at the time of application.

  • Proficient in the full array of Microsoft Office applications.

  • Advanced communication skills including, but not limited to, being able to interact with representatives of other law enforcement agencies and receive information regarding candidates experience in said agencies.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct themselves in a professional manner, represent the department in a positive light, and act in an appropriate manner with a limited need for close supervision.

  • Possess the ability to conduct impartial background investigations consistent with the standing operating procedures of the Applicant Investigation and Processing unit.

    The following qualifications are preferred:

  • Previous experience in an administrative assignment within the MTA Police Department

  • Documented history conducting pre-employment background investigations.

  • Experience within the realm of Human Resources and/or Recruitment and Retention

  • Previous experience within Criminal Justice Administration

  • Documented history of formalized training in Background Investigations for Police Applicants

    Other Information :

    Interested employees who meet the above listed qualifications will be invited to participate in a panel interview. Candidates should understand that they are not guaranteed an assignment with the Applicant Investigation Unit, even if they meet each of the above qualifications.

    Candidates who have recent substantiated discipline/suspension or who have a documented history of lateness or absenteeism not related to sickness or work injury may be removed from interview consideration.
