Principal Financial Group Director - Origination and Structuring, Private Infrastructure Debt in New York, New York

What You'll Do

We are excited to announce the expansion of our new Private Infrastructure Debt team and are looking for dynamic professionals to join us! We have two exciting positions available: one focusing on the Americas and Asia Pacific regions, and the other on EMEA.

The Director – Origination & Structuring will play a pivotal role in building and expanding our senior and high-yield debt origination capabilities within the Infrastructure Debt platform. Reporting directly to the Head of Originations and Structuring, Infrastructure Debt, this role will be instrumental in driving our growth and success across key global markets. These roles will focus on origination/underwriting and portfolio activity across geographically assigned areas and work with relevant market participants including Sponsors, Advisors and Agents. The role will cover key infrastructure sectors including transportation, power and energy, utilities, digital, social infrastructure, and project financings.

  • Originate bespoke investment opportunities based on strategic fit and financial return. Developing and managing a focused senior debt and high yield origination effort that is aligned with Principal’s investment strategies. Evaluate investment opportunities and underwrite/manage infrastructure debt transactions. Provide recommendations as to whether time and resources should be allocated based on fit with Principal’s investment criteria and preliminary investment theses. Further develop existing sponsor relationships and build new sponsor relationships to ensure substantial origination over time.

  • Develop, maintain and leverage relationships with prospective Sponsors, advisors, and agents. Maintaining and institutionalizing a deep understanding of Sponsor and market activity by monitoring and reporting material fund raising, M&A, investments and portfolio activities.

  • Collaborating with the infrastructure debt team in screening, underwriting, approval, and closing processes for each financing opportunities.

  • Supporting the expansion of Principal’s general marketing efforts that include all products and capabilities. Attend and facilitate sessions at infrastructure focused M&A events, forums and industry conferences.

  • Supporting the firms efforts to attract, develop, and retain best-in-class origination, underwriting and portfolio management talent.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree required. MBA or CFA expected.

  • Strong credit capabilities with 10+ years of relevant infrastructure / project finance originations experience, including at least 5+ years of direct underwriting and portfolio management experience.

  • Proven sales and negotiation skills, with established relationships with senior members of leading infrastructure sponsors, agents, and advisors that include a history of sourcing a diverse set of attractive financing transactions.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of global market pricing and terms, with a creative and balanced approach to credit structuring and pricing.

  • Experience in managing transaction teams, leading the execution effort from origination to closing.

  • Easily demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills along with strong motivation and leadership skills.

  • Ability to maintain a calm, steady, patient approach to business while passionately competing for new business in a highly competitive environment.

  • Accepts and manages conflict and disagreement in a constructive and professional manner

  • 20-30% travel including international trips.

  • This position may be subject to SEC restrictions on personal political contributions.

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$205000 - $277000 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

Location and Work Environments

We’re open to considering talent in the New Jersey / New York area. This role offers the ability to work hybrid for in-office and some remote. You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
