Junior Consumer Product Designer, Out of Print (Remote) Are you a devotee of great books and fantastic fan merchandise? Penguin Random House is seeking a Junior Consumer Product Designer to join a fast-paced and innovative design team, working on Out of Print consumer products. The junior designer will have the opportunity to create merchandise for a wide array of genres and titles – from licensed brands and major authors to kids’ characters – as well as conceptualize new designs from the ground up. This role will involve working closely with the Director of Merchandising and the Senior Consumer Product Designer to brainstorm and create t-shirts, tote bags, accessories, and other consumer goods for sale. Out of Print’s mission is to celebrate the joy of reading by creating high-quality, stylish apparel and accessories. Designed with readers in mind, our products feature iconic book-related artwork and literary references to delight book lovers of all ages. Our shirts, totes, socks, and accessories allow readers to wear their favorite stories and share their love of reading with the world. The ideal Junior Consumer Product Designer is a creative illustrator who is organized and able to manage multiple projects at once. Candidates should have excellent communication skills, a strong design portfolio, and at least 1 year of design experience as a staff designer, design intern, or related freelance work. • Conceptualizing and designing products and packaging, utilizing brand and licensed material from mockups to finished products

• Working closely with team leadership to refine designs and copy, incorporate feedback, and route work for approval

• Keeping up to date on design trends and comparable product trends and participating in group brainstorms and discussions

• Preparing final artwork files for a variety of vendors and communicating instructions and feedback throughout the sampling process

• Illustrating new original concepts from the ground up and incorporating feedback from the sketch phase through to final production

The Essentials:

• Minimum of 1-year design experience as a staff designer, design intern, or related freelance work

• High proficiency in Adobe Photoshop is required to succeed in this role

• Excellent design ability and illustration skills will be a top priority for consideration and should be demonstrated in your portfolio

• Proven self-starter with strong task management skills and attention to detail

• Proven ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

• Ability to communicate, problem-solve creatively, and collaborate well with internal and external partners, incorporating various rightsholders’ feedback under tight deadlines

• Ability to create across a wide range of aesthetics, audiences, and project types while remaining flexible, inquisitive, and eager to learn

• An avid reader or book enthusiast is a plus

• Experience with screen-printing is a plus

• Consumer product design experience is a plus

• A strong comprehension of Adobe Illustrator and a strong understanding of type is a plus but not a requirement for success in this role

The salary for this position is $53,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results. Penguin Random House job postings include a good faith compensation range for each open position. The salary range listed is specific to each particular open position and takes into account various factors including the specifics of the individual role, and candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
