The People eXperience and Technology Central Science Team (PXTCS) uses economics, behavioral science, statistics, and machine learning to proactively identify mechanisms and process improvements which simultaneously improve Amazon and the lives, wellbeing, and the value of work to Amazonians. We are an interdisciplinary team that combines the talents of science and engineering to develop and deliver solutions that measurably achieve this goal.

Key job responsibilities

As a Principal Applied Scientist for People Experience and Technology (PXT) Central Science, you will be responsible for providing scientific thought leadership for our science and engineering teams, specifically for re-imagining recruiting with Machine Learning and Generative AI. Your goal will be to develop science for increasing the efficiency and improving the quality and consistency of recruiting, there by delighting candidates, recruiters, and hiring managers. The role has broad scope as Amazon recruits for both Corporate and Operations roles and these have distinct requirements. In addition, the team works on some of Amazon’s most strategic technical investments in the people space and supports Amazon’s efforts to be Earth’s Best Employer. In this role you will have a significant impact on 1.5 million Amazonians and the communities Amazon serves.

You will also play a critical role in the organization's business planning, work closely with senior leaders to develop goals and resource requirements, influence our long-term technical and business strategy, and help hire and develop science and engineering talent. You will provide science thought leadership and support to business partners, helping them use the best scientific methods and science-driven tools to solve current and upcoming challenges and deliver efficiency gains in a changing market.

Basic Qualifications

Advanced degree (e.g., M.S. or PhD) in computer science, statistics, engineering, mathematics or related discipline.

10+ years of industry and academic experience in building machine learning models.

Experience building complex, real-world systems involving NLP techniques.

Some experience with Gen AI for foundational models and Large Language Models.

Demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed scientific publications that advance state-of-the art applied science.

Familiar with one or more programming languages such as Python, C/C++, Java, or Perl.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience implementing algorithms, tailored to business needs and tested on large data sets.

Strong research track record.

Experience with a broad range of NLP systems such as automated text generation, text summarization, chatbots, automated reasoning, dialogue management, question answer, and/or text classification, and developing generative AI solutions.

Combination of deep technical skills and business savvy enough to interface with all levels and disciplines within our customer’s organization.

Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively advocate technical solutions to research scientists, engineering teams and business audiences.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $159,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $309,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
