City of New York Project Manager in New York, New York

Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the city towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledge experts.

The DOC has a unique career opportunity for experienced Project Managers in the Security Operations Division. Security Operations oversee all security functions on the Rikers Island and at outposts to support facility operations and programs initiatives in support of the Department’s mission. The selected candidate’s responsibilities include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Take ownership of project issue/risk management process, by contributing to the

    identification and prioritization of existing and potential issues and risks,

    and developing strategies to mitigate;

  • Serve as the responsible stakeholder in critical DOC project implementation;

  • Use sound judgement to identify which issues and risks should be escalated to

    appropriate stakeholders and prepare relevant reports/documentation;

  • Prepare project status reports, presentations, agendas,

    and maintain applicable supporting documents;

  • Track and manage the execution of critical processes across project operations;

  • Liaise between DOC leadership and initiative owners to ensure

    project objectives are achieved and stakeholders are aligned;

  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies;

  • Develop expertise in jail operations and national reform efforts;

  • Manage tasks of project coordinator(s) in relation to project development and execution;

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of individuals

    in addition to the PMO team, project stakeholders, and external agencies;

  • Problem solve and provide suggestions to agency leadership;

  • Performing special projects and related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.

To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:

  1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or

  2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or

  3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.

Probationary Period

Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
