New York Times Senior Editor, Weather Team in New York, New York

Job Description

The New York Times is looking for an experienced editor to join our Weather Data team. As one of the managers on the team, you’ll lead a team of reporters/meteorologists as we cover all weather phenomena — including hurricanes, severe storms, droughts, heat waves and more — on a variety of platforms. You will work with the graphics editors and coders on our team to publish live trackers for these events and with other departments in the newsroom to explain weather phenomena to our readers and to help them prepare.

You’ll be responsible for story planning and execution, including working with Express, Live, National, International and Well to cover weather events across the globe. This editor needs to be eager to jump on breaking news and able to shape enterprise stories, working with reporters in London, New York, Atlanta and San Francisco to cover the weather stories of the day. You’ll also work with other departments on story promotion, thinking through how we reach new audiences with our reporting.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Participate in highest-level planning conversations about our coverage, trackers and graphics, and be in charge of steering our words coverage of weather

  • Edit and oversee stories from our reporters, both in live coverage and longer term enterprise

  • Manage several reporters/meteorologists

  • Assign and edit stories

  • Collaborate with the audience team to pitch and promote our stories, internally and externally

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of relevant journalism experience, including as a digital media editor in breaking news situations

  • Interest in weather coverage

  • Management experience, including multiple direct reports

  • Demonstrated news judgment experience

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, deadlines and time-management

  • Must be willing to work occasional nights and weekends

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience editing weather or climate stories and covering weather events

  • Experience editing data-heavy packages

  • A proven track record of working successfully on an interdisciplinary team with visual and data journalists

  • Experience in a newsroom or large media organization

  • Experience with audience data and promotion, including search and social platforms

Location: New York is preferred, but candidates in London will also be considered.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $150,000.00 and $170,000.00.
