The Search Customer Experience team is responsible for worldwide customer facing search features on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices. Everything from the moment a customer clicks into the search box to when they view search results. We use data mining and usability data to develop new features ideas and we test them through hundreds of A/B experiments a year. This immense amount of data allows us to leverage machine learning to build smarter and more personalized experiences for our customers across a wide variety of categories, from instant video and Kindle books to apparel and electronics.

We are looking for a customer-obsessed SDM to embrace the challenge of building the most delightful shopping experience on earth. On a day-to-day basis, you will lead a close-knit team of engineers that are agile, data driven, and highly collaborative. You'll analyze customer behavior, propose ideas and solutions during sprint planning with your team, implement big ideas, and then measure the results. You will hire and develop SDEs at all levels and partner with them to address long standing customer problems even if it means building features in areas outside of Search. You will lead mindful discussions with your customers, our product team, designers and researchers and help harmonize discordant views.

You should have expertise in building large-scale web applications and/or low-latency services, optimized for performance. You should love the challenge of balancing operational hardening with speed of delivery as you work on large-scale, customer facing projects. You are equally comfortable leading tactical delivery as you are defining north star vision for your area. You are an excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing, and use this skill to relentlessly advocate for customer needs.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience

  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $148,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
