New York Times Supervising Editor, NYT Wirecutter in New York, New York

The mission (https://www.nytco.com/company/mission-and-values/) of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Job Description

About the Role

Wirecutter is seeking a supervising editor to join our discovery team, a group of writers and editors dedicated to applying Wirecutter’s best-in-class approach to service journalism in formats outside of our classic product guide.

As supervising editor, you’ll lead a team of writers to help develop franchises and frameworks that inform and inspire readers in making smart buying decisions. You’ll introduce our readers to new products and categories, and help them to use their products better (clean it! extend it! use it in more ways!).

You’ll craft content packages in partnership with our social, newsletter and coverage teams to reach readers where they spend their time (on social, in their inboxes, on emerging channels), and bring our journalists forward each step of the way to drive home just how hands-on we are with our rigorous product testing and research.

We’re looking for an editor who can storytell powerfully, coach writers thoughtfully, hop on trends discerningly, and delight our readers each and every day. You have experience working hands on with writers as both an editor and people manager.

This role reports to our deputy editorial director and has the potential to be remote, though New York City-based applicants are preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with our deputy editorial director to develop the team’s strategy and assign projects to staff and freelance writers

  • Write short-form and occasional long-form content

  • Project-manage multiple articles and related social media assets, and other content with different writers; manage deadlines and process; review writers’ supporting documents and notes; edit and revise copy; and work closely with experienced Wirecutter editors to ensure stories are up to the editorial standards we’ve established

  • Contribute original ideas to planning, suggest creative reporting strategies, and challenge writers’ assumptions

  • Use data to support potential story ideas and track performance; work with our SEO team and editorial managers to plan new content

  • Collaborate with and respond to queries from fact checkers, copy editors, and producers to prepare pieces for publication

  • Work with our audience team to respond to reader feedback and questions; work with our affiliate team to resolve stock issues on recommendations; work with our operations team on product orders and testing plans; work with our photo editors to coordinate photography plans.

  • Perform related work as assigned

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience working at a media company with at least one year of experience working with and editing writers

  • Experience with SEO (from an editorial perspective, not the technical aspects of optimization) and a sense of how to use web analytics data to make editorial decisions

  • Experience with social media platforms and a general understanding of which content performs best on each platform

  • Experience writing or editing timely, short-form content, collaborating with an art director and/or photo editor to present content visually, and expressing complex ideas using visualizations such as charts, graphs, or infographics is advantageous as well

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Passion balanced by skepticism of marketing claims and unproven ideas

The annual base pay range for this role is between $92,700.00 and $109,000.00.
