Job Description

The New York Times Video Unit is seeking a video journalist to work with our Daily News Team with expertise in verifying user generated content (UGC) and open-source reporting working during the evenings from 12-8pm.

You have experience developing stories based on open-source reporting and have the ability to react to breaking news stories, vet visual evidence and reveal new insights.

You will produce original video-driven videos that help viewers understand complex news stories and help repurpose news videos for social platforms. You will collaborate with our newsroom live journalism team, reporter video team and visual investigations team.

This video journalist is eager to improve visual storytelling formats, excel at collaboration and have editorial news judgment. We’re looking for candidates who succeed under newsroom deadlines and have experience juggling multiple projects at any given time. You will report into Senior Producer for Live News, Evenings.

This is a hybrid position based in New York, NY.

Responsibilities:

  • You will require the production of different videos from standalone clips to short-form video news packages for social media platforms.

  • You will find and verify user-generated content.

  • Sourcing, scripting and editing live, breaking news, enterprise news video packages onsite and for social media.

  • You will produce linear video and interactive formats.

  • You will use news wire services such as AP and Reuters to acquire material.

  • You will set up and monitor live feeds, and create text and graphics

  • Write attention-grabbing video headlines and summaries for videos on the website and social platforms.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of journalism experience (preferably in a digital video or broadcast newsroom).

  • Apply open-source research skills, including: sourcing audio-visual evidence from a variety of platforms; geolocation and chrono-location; satellite imagery analysis; video synchronization; and map out critical incidents using visuals.

  • Can edit quickly with Adobe Premiere Pro.

  • Premiere editing experience.

  • Writing and researching skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of current events, with experience covering domestic and international news events.

  • The ability to make decisions under intense deadlines in a high-pressure newsroom setting.

  • Knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for visuals.

  • Well-versed in the world of social and digital media, with an eye on what competitors are doing and what new tools are being used.

  • Collaborative team player.

  • Ability to be available to work during breaking news events.

  • Commitment to The New York Times mission and values.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $111,049.64 and $118,000.00.
