Position Summary:

The Newark College of Engineering invites applications for temporary hourly instructor positions to teach various STEM modules in grant-funded, non-credit summer programs. The duration of the STEM modules ranges from 1 to 5 weeks, typically operating 3-4 days per week for 6-8 hours each day. Instructors will deliver inquiry-based, product-oriented instruction to enhance students' knowledge, understanding, and application of STEM content and concepts. They will also integrate engineering fundamentals, interdisciplinary topics, hands-on activities in the Makerspace, and emerging technologies into their teaching. This role is primarily focused on teaching, with instructors having access to a fully developed curriculum and support from subject matter experts, TAs, and the program team.

Essential Functions:

Successful candidates are expected to take full responsibility for the training program modules for the duration of their assignment, deliver lectures based on a pre-developed STEM curriculum, prepare and grade assignments, learn and use the online course management system (Canvas), plan time during the week to meet with TAs and the Program Leadership Team as needed, and provide program assessment and student progress/achievement reports.

  • Must be available to work in person within the window of June 17, 2024 - August 15, 2024.

  • Collaborates with relevant program personnel on content delivery, lesson planning, and associated activities.

  • Takes full responsibility for the part of the training program they are assigned to and notifies the Program Leadership Team of any changes to the scheduled activities or any issues with the program operations.

  • Create an environment of respect and rapport through positive interactions with students and establish a culture for learning by emphasizing the importance of learning, having high expectations for all learners, and cultivating an environment where students take pride in their work.

  • Effectively manage classroom procedures such as instructional groupings, transitions from one activity to another, preparation/distribution/collection of materials and supplies, and daily routines.

  • Communicate effectively with students and teaching assistants about expectations, directions, and content explanations.

  • Use questioning and discussion techniques to engage students in learning and solicit evidence of understanding.

  • Design engaging activities for students that are well organized and structured with suitable spacing.

  • Utilize effective strategies to determine student starting points, set clear criteria for assessment, monitor student learning, and evaluate learning outcomes.

Additional Functions:

  • Attend regular staff meetings.

  • Work closely, cooperatively, and amicably with other staff members.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

  • Previous teaching and/or curriculum development experience.

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited institution in the area applicable to teaching area; currently employed with duties related to teaching subject area.

  • Professional experience substantial in duration and level of responsibility.

  • Sustained academic or professional engagement activities within the last 5 years.

  • Possesses good leadership abilities and communication skills.

  • Experienced in hands-on activities and experiential learning and teaching.

  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • NJIT teaching and/or curriculum development experience is an added advantage.

  • Master’s or higher degree preferred.
