Position Summary:

Under the leadership of the Trio Director, the Upward Bound Counselor provides academic, career, and educational counseling, as well as assistance with completing the college admissions and financial aid process. The counselor also provides motivational support and acts as an advocate for program participants. Other services coordinated by the UB Counselor include academic instruction, mentoring, and tutoring.

The Upward Bound Counselor is responsible for the effective implementation and achievement of all goals, objectives, and standards associated with the Upward Bound Program as outlined by the US Department of Education.

During the academic year, there are 26 to 28 sessions on Saturdays that run from 8:30 am until 2:30 pm. There is also an afterschool program that runs Monday thru Thursday from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm as well as evening orientations and activities that are typically scheduled from 6 pm until 8:00 pm.

During the summer a six-week summer program is conducted, with four of those weeks being residential. During the summer program, staff are expected to be available on campus, for overnight supervision of students for the duration of the residential program and should expect to work longer hours during the day. Saturday and off-hour work is required.

The Upward Bound Counselor reports to the Project Director; however, they will work very closely with high school and middle school teachers and counselors, and with the appropriate campus and community agency personnel.

Essential Functions:

  • Screen middle (8th graders) and high school students to determine eligibility.

  • Collect, analyze and maintain student data, including report cards, test scores, and Personal Educational Plans to improve service delivery to students and increase student outcomes.

  • Develop and maintain a file on each eligible participant for use in education and career planning.

  • Supervise and conduct group counseling, individual counseling, and personal development activities.

  • Organize and conduct career workshops, seminars, and other educational activities. Must be willing to make off-site school visits regularly.

  • Conduct entrance and exit interviews of program participants.

  • Assist the Program Director in program planning and evaluation, reviewing applications for admission, and financial aid, assessing educational needs and goals of project participants.

  • Assist in developing program proposals and preparing reports.

  • Prepare budgets for programming activities.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of the curriculum.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Area of academic discipline should be Student Personnel Services, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.

  • Must have two or more years of counseling experience in educational administration and educational counseling at the high school or post-secondary level.

  • Must have experience in conducting testing and training activities.

  • Must be available to work on Saturdays, to provide overnight supervision on campus for the duration of the residential part of the summer program (overnight duties will be split between appropriate staff) and on-call 24 hours during the duration of the summer program.

  • Must have a valid Driver's License and access to a vehicle.

  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree Student Personnel Services, Counseling, Social Work or a related field. Experience working with minority and disadvantaged students.

  • Knowledge of TRIO programs is helpful.
