Position Details

This position will have primary responsibility for manufacturing automation activities related to Ultralife’s lithium battery production. Automation activities encompasses fully automated, semi-automated, and discreet automation systems including tools and fixtures. Particular focus will be devoted to commissioning, validation, maintenance, day-to-day troubleshooting and coordinating repair and improvements of automated production equipment in support of the Company’s quality and production standards. Current systems and equipment include several custom, integrated production modules involving Allen Bradley and Panasonic PLC hardware, Flex-Link conveyors and Epson robots.

The individual in this position must possess excellent hands-on ability, insight and awareness directing efforts on equipment reliability, process uptime, yield improvements and cost reduction. This position will work in a cross-functional team reporting to the Director of Operations with direct responsibility for manufacturing engineering efforts within assigned operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Install, commission, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and ultrasonic equipment. Troubleshooting, coordinating repair and upgrades of process equipment directly on the production floor.

  • Perform routine diagnostic checks and monitoring of automated systems. Troubleshoot and repair automated systems, using knowledge of microprocessors, programmable controllers, electronics, circuit analysis, mechanics, sensors, feedback systems or pneumatics.

  • Directly support development and installation of new production processes. Provide control system assistance during new or modified equipment startup.

  • Create and update product drawings, fixturing, work instructions, test procedures and quality assurance requirements.

  • Validate or re-validate process and fixture capability.

  • Participate in overall improvement activities leading to improved safety, enhanced efficiencies, better quality, and lower costs based on input obtained from cross functional sources including engineering, production and maintenance.

  • Train production staff members in manufacturing processes and standard operating procedures.

  • Coordinate engineering activities for sustaining products in production and participate in the transition for new products into production among cross-functional organizations (Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, Engineering, and Senior Management).

  • Author and revise controlled manufacturing documentation and procedures per ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 standards.

  • Support QMS through development and execution of validation studies, control plans, PFMEA documents, process flows, etc. Comply with and make recommendations to the Quality Management System.

  • Work with internal and 3rd party organizations to drive automation solutions for our commercial and government production lines.

  • Use discreet and fully automated solutions to improve throughput & quality on existing manufacturing lines.

Education / Training / Skills / Experience:

  • BS in Engineering (Electrical (Preferred), Mechanical, Industrial or Manufacturing) required.

  • 7+ years as an engineer in an automated manufacturing environment required.

  • Experience with installation, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and ultrasonic equipment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of microprocessors, programmable controllers, electronics, circuit analysis, mechanics, sensors, feedback systems or pneumatics. Experience with Allen-Bradley hardware, Rockwell RSLogix software, Epson robots preferred. Previous work with Panasonic and Telemecanique will also be beneficial.

  • Ability to read mechanical and electrical blueprints and have a solid understanding of basic electrical mechanical control systems to effectively learn and run automated systems.

  • Strong math, computer and electronics skills; ability to work with hand tools and various instruments.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Must be able to troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing problems related to materials, equipment, and all other processes on an ongoing basis.

  • Ability to work independently as a self-starter and interact with all organizational levels in a proactive, diligent, and organized manner, with strong attention to detail.

  • Proficient computer skills (including MS Office, AutoCAD).

Must have a general knowledge of ISO requirements and working knowledge of those requirements as they pertain to document/record control, new product development, work environment including temperature / humidity / contamination, identification / traceability / preservation of product, property management, supplier maintenance, monitoring / measuring /
