Dietetic Assistant

Position Summary:

Directly interacts with the patient to provide for their nutritional and meal needs. Provides customer service in a way that exhibits the PRIDE values of the organization. Prepares and services meals for retail, patient services, catering, off-site locations and special events. Performs services to ensure optimal nutritional care and education of patients in accordance with established standards of care, compliance with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Standards, state standards, and other regulatory requirements.

Supervisor, Clinical Dietary Services

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

  • Instructs patients and their families in nutritional principles, dietary plans, food selection and preparation.

  • Guides meal selections in accordance with the dietary profile and ensures all data in the profile is translated to the menu. Evaluates appropriateness of diet prescription utilizing subjective and objective patient data. Able to identify and assist in any age-related needs with respect to menu selection process including the geriatric, pediatric, and neurologically compromised patient.

  • Obtains meal selections on a daily basis, assisting patients with to maintain diet compliance. Maintains friendly, efficient Spirit of Service attitude towards customers, co-workers and clients. Communicates with patients on a daily basis and obtains food preferences and allergies.

  • Recognizes and adopts activities appropriate to the specific needs of the patient population and demonstrates knowledge of specific issues directly related to the patient population.

  • Continually checks necessary reports and systems for timely patient meal order entry.

  • Fields phone calls from patients and allied health team members. Resolves issues, submits late/early trays, and works collaboratively with tray assembly in the provision for the patients needs.

  • Enters appropriate information obtained into VST diet office system. Maintains accurate records to meet regulatory agency guidelines and assists in statistical analysis of data. Orients patients to food service policies and procedures.

  • Works with and at the direction of the Clinical Nutrition Manager and the Supervisors of Clinical Dietary Services to complete other tasks deemed necessary for the proper functioning of the department.

  • Communicates necessary information to Dietitians including referring any patients deemed to be at nutritional risk. Participates in the hospital community as a nutrition advocate. Interacts in resolving problems with menus and/or meal service.

  • Work assigned station on Patient Tray Line. Places standard items on patient trays as described on patient menu and in accordance with portion control standards. Assures tray accuracy and adheres to proper time and temperature procedures. Stocks, replenishes, and sets up necessary stations on the patient tray line. Breaks down and cleans stations on tray line as assigned. Loads and unloads patient trays into the designated service trucks.

  • Prepares, sets up, and maintains assigned service stations in the retail and catering areas. Sets up and maintains necessary supplies from the appropriate storage area. Sets up and prepares necessary food items such as breads, coffee, grilled to order items, sandwich preparation, salad bar preparation, and other requirements in accordance with retail and regulatory standards.

  • Delivers and retrieves trucks to units in timely and professional manner following scanning procedure for documentation. Delivers trays and retrieves trays to patients with professionalism and in a courteous fashion. Adheres to all regulatory standards.

  • Responsible for all other tasks as assigned.

    Qualifications:

  • Requires HS graduate or GED. Minimum 3 years’ experience working in a diet office preferred. Undergraduate in nutrition or related field preferred.

    Requirements:

    Job requires standing, sitting, walking and stooping for long periods of time. Requires lifting up to 25#. Requires computer skills for data processing and hospital systems. Exposed to varying degrees of kitchen elements.

Required:

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent.

  2. 0-3 years of prior experience.

Preferred:

  1. Prior experience in a call center other healthcare setting preferred.

  2. SerSafe Food Handler
