Description

The City of Norfolk Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking intermittent part-time Recreation Aides responsible for supporting recreation programs and activities and assisting program participants with a focus on athletics and fitness.

Department Hiring Rate: $15.00/hour

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Assists with the planning and implementation of programs including sports competitions, senior recreation, fitness, skate park, therapeutic recreation, and special events.

  • Provides oversight and direction of program participants and volunteers, monitors events, programs, participants, and spectators.

  • Performs administrative duties including answering phones, responding to patrons, completing forms, setting up and breaking down necessary equipment, etc.

  • Maintains facility order and cleanliness.

  • Maintains a professional demeanor and appearance.

  • Enforces facility rules and entrance requirements

  • This position requires excellent inter-personal, communication and organizational skills and the ability to effectively interact with and contribute to the growth and development of diverse citizen groups. • Ability to see, hear, stand/walk for extended periods of time, lift from ground to above shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and utilize telephone communications

Education/Experience

  • Requires level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency; Graduation from high school or equivalent preferred.

  • Some experience working in a customer service setting or experience working with children/youth in a recreation, athletics, fitness, aquatics, education setting preferred.

  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification is preferred.

  • This position requires excellent inter-personal, communication and organizational skills and the ability to effectively interact with and contribute to the growth and development of diverse citizen groups.

  • Ability to see, hear, stand/walk for extended periods of time, lift from ground to above shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and utilize telephone communications

Additional Information & Requirements

The preferred candidate will possess:

  • A Valid Driver’s License.

    Work Hours: Monday to Saturday; 6:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.; not to exceed 19.5 hours per week; flexible hours will apply including weekends, holidays, and special events.

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
