JOB OVERVIEW The Utah STEM Action Center is seeking AmeriCorps Math Mentors to build confidence and improve math skills for students in 4th through 8th grade in targeted areas of Utah (primarily in Logan,Ogden,Weber,Millard,Piute,Garfield and San Juan counties) Mentors will report to the AmeriCorps Grant Coordinator at the STEM Action Center,and will work closely with a Site Supervisor at one school location.   Some responsibilities include:

  • leading small group-based mentoring and software-focused math activities
  • helping students set and achieve weekly goals
  • working with the STEM Action Center and the participating school to recruit community volunteers for mentoring support

ABOUT AMERICORPS: AmeriCorps is a national organization modeled after the Peace Corps that involves opportunities for individuals to contribute to the betterment of their community through working in schools and with non-profit organizations. The Utah STEM Action Center AmeriCorps Math Mentors Program (AMMP) is funded through the nationwide AmeriCorps organization and the Utah State Commission on Volunteers (UServe).   BENEFITS OF BEING A MENTOR: Mentors have the chance to learn about the classroom and about math intervention through first-hand experience with students. In the process,they develop excellent management,organization,and volunteer supervision skills as they work hand in hand with professional educators to manage a meaningful and effective tutoring program in a school.   Mentors work closely with the AmeriCorps Math Mentors Program (AMMP) staff during their term of service and have ongoing access to the nationwide AmeriCorps Alumni Network that can help them with networking,employment and mentorship opportunities. SALARY: *Mentors are paid every two weeks with a stipend up to *$675.00. Exact amount depends on the number of hours committed by Mentor. *Hourly rate averages $15.00. * *The total *living allowance for 900 hours:

  • $13,500 as part-time (900 hours)

EDUCATIONAL AWARD: Mentors are awarded an education credit at the end of each honorably completed service year that can be used for tuition,fees,and books at any accredited post-secondary institution or towards payment of student loans.   A total of $3,697.50 for 900 hours of service will be provided for this position. Mentors over the age of 55 can transfer their education award to a child or grandchild.*  All Mentors qualify for forbearance of payments on current student loans. *   Each Mentor can serve for up to 4 terms and can receive the equivalent of up to two full time education awards. HOUR REQUIREMENTS AND SCHEDULE DETAILS: * **To complete the minimum number of service hours required,Mentors should be able to commit to the following schedule:  

  • Part-time (900 hours): 4.5 hours each school day of direct service at the school and approximately 1.5 additional hours/week for community service and another 2 hours/week of Mentor development activities.  Approximately 22-26 hours/week during a regular 5-day school week. 

     These schedules may be flexible if Mentors wish to increase their weekly hour quotas to complete their term of service within a shorter annual period. REQUIREMENTS:

  • Mentors sho uld have experience working with children or youth.

  • Mentors must be a high school graduate.
  • Mentors must produce a copy of high school graduation (or equivalent education) verification.
  • Mentors must provide proof of authorization to work in the United States. Documents may include: a U.S. passport or U.S. passport card,or Form I-551,Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt Card (commonly called a Gree Card),or a Foreign passport that contains a temporary I-551 stamp or Form I-777,or an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) that contains a photograph.
  • Mentors must submit to and pass an FBI background check/National Sex Offender Database check conducted prior to hire in accordance with NSCHC requirements. 
  • Mentors should have a working knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Mentors must be proficient with basic computer software. 
  • Mentors must be able to collaborate with teachers,administrators,volunteers,and program managers. 
  • Preference may be given to those with proficiency in an additional language (i.e. Spanish,Navajo,etc.). 

*MENTOR RESPONSIBILITIES: *

  • Lead small math group academic mentoring and help with software-focused math activities.
  • Meet with designated site supervisor regularly to discuss the needs of the students in the AMMP program
  • Help students set and achieve weekly goals to help them take ownership of their academic progress
  •  Use the Mentor Tracking Sheet (a Google form) to track intervention time,activities,goal setting,and make notes for all students on their caseload.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Complete up to 50 hours of community service hours (part of the 900 hour Mentor contract) to aid the community with needs beyond their regular tutoring program responsibilities. Organize and participate in community service projects during 9/11 Remembrance Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day 
  • Recruit,train and supervise community volunteers and/or older students to help grow the AmeriCorps Math Mentor program.
  • Attend an initial online onboarding orientation,an in-person training in Oct/Nov and a statewide AmeriCorps Member Gathering conference in March.
