[The University of Nebraska at Omaha invites applications for the position of Lab Manager / Preparator for the Studio Art Labs and Art Gallery. This position is a full-time (40 hours per week), benefited position. This position assists in managing and maintaining the art studio facilities in the Weber Fine Arts Building and the Sculpture and Ceramics Studio. In addition, the position assists in installing exhibit installations at the UNO Art Gallery. The successful candidate will be able to work in a diverse educational environment and be committed to the success of students from differing backgrounds and experiences.

[The Lab Manager/Preparator reports to the Director of the School of the Arts and manages the daily operations of the studio art facilities, equipment, and the UNO Art Gallery as well as being the primary Unit contact with Facilities Services for all studio lab maintenance issues and requests. This position maintains studio equipment and provides technical assistance to the faculty and students in the Art and Art History Unit and the UNO Art Gallery and assists faculty members with training and supervising students on the proper and safe use of equipment and is responsible for teaching and maintaining best practices regarding cleaning and safety. These responsibilities include the daily operation of the art studios during the academic year as well as summer classes. Maintains regular email contact with faculty members regarding projects. Submits and monitors all maintenance requests for studio labs with Facilities Services. Keeps an accurate log of work hours on labs and faculty members associated with projects. Supervises and instructs students in the safe operation of all power and hand tools. Works with facilities to arrange safe storage and disposal of hazardous waste generated from studio classroom use. Maintains machinery and equipment in good working order, provides general upkeep in studio labs. Assists with studio setup for specific courses. Regulate use of stationery and portable power tools. Co-coordinate and assist with the UNO Art Gallery Director for 4-6 exhibit installations each academic year. Educates and supervises student shop users regarding material and equipment safety and appropriate housekeeping practices; maintains safety equipment in good working order. Assists faculty with demonstrations pertaining to course projects. Other duties as assigned.

  • BA/BFA in Studio Art or an art-related field
  • One (1) year of relevant experience. Basic art material knowledge and skills, painting skills, ability to work with a range of materials. Attention to cleanliness, safety procedures, and organizational methods. Excellent communication skills for working with students, the Gallery Curator/Manager, and the Studio Art faculty. Demonstrated ability to provide technical, safety, and instructional support.
