A Brief Overview

Responsible for coordination, implementation, and completion of evidence-based methodologies to improve systems and process across the enterprise. Promotes excellence in quality, patient safety, and service excellence by facilitating improvement across the enterprise and provides improvement methodology education.

Essential Functions

  • Patient Safety/Performance Improvement • Works collaboratively with patient care services, ancillary departments, the medical staff, and multidisciplinary groups to identify, evaluate and recommend modifications of high-risk clinical activities that may lead to patient harm. • Review Eye on Safety reports daily and participate in Daily Safety Brief. • Coordinate and facilitate department Case Reviews to identify gaps in care and assign appropriate action items to prevent future occurrences. • Utilizes evidence-based methodologies, i.e. RCA, FMEA, ACAs to improve systems and processes. Assures accountability assigned for sustainment of performance improvement activities. • Responsible to collect, oversee, analyze, and display data using tools and techniques that are appropriate for the intended audience. • Facilitates all levels of cause analysis, develops standard documentation templates and event specific documents, and works with responsible staff to assure completion of selected actions. • Serves as liaison and PI resource to Nursing shared governance councils and hospital Interdisciplinary Committees. • Analyzes and aggregates variance information, identifies trends, and reports findings to department and organization leaders as appropriate. • Liaison between the Patient Safety Organization and our organization • Serves as an instructor for New Employee Orientation on Error Prevention.

  • Project Management • In collaboration with senior leadership, identifies and prioritizes organizational projects that align with the strategic plan. • Works collaboratively with project stakeholders to develop a comprehensive project plan. Project plans will include Scope, Schedule, Cost, Anticipated Outcomes, Organization and Communications, Staffing, Risk and Issue Management, and Change Management. • Perform project planning. Create, build, and update project schedules, project charters, project plans, status reports, and work breakdown structures. • Foresee potential barriers in projects and communicate accordingly. • Facilitate and lead project meetings as necessary. • Implement and manage project changes and interventions to achieve desired project outcomes. • Collects, analyzes, and displays data demonstrating project performance, using appropriate tools and techniques to project evaluations and assessment of results. • Influence others and move toward a common vision or goal. • Identifies and engages key stakeholders for pathway development and serves as a liaison with other departments to ensure successful pathway implementation. • Facilitates clinical pathway development by coaching project leaders, planning, implementing, tracking, and assisting with data collection and analysis.

  • Education • Provides formal and just-in-time training on quality improvement and patient safety tactics. • Maintains a multi-tiered quality and safety education program. Assess education program annually for effectiveness. • Develops and maintains organization-wide templates for documentation of quality improvement activities, assuring consistency of written information.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science, from an accredited college or university Required and

  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • Minimum three years’ experience in healthcare-related performance/process improvement or project management Required and

  • Minimum three years clinical experience, preferably in pediatrics Required

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong clinical knowledge and background

  • The basic principles of performance improvement, including cause analysis process

  • Methods and mechanisms of using data to evaluate safety and performance

  • The relationship between variation and outcome

  • Computer programs including word processing, graphics, spreadsheet, presentations

  • Must demonstrate positive interpersonal relationship skills with individuals and groups in a wide variety of settings

  • Critical thinking skills

  • Able to do strategic planning and project management

  • Skills in negotiation, problem solving, educational, and quality improvement strategies

Licenses and Certifications

  • Six Sigma Green Belt Certification within two years of hire Preferred and

  • BCLS - Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association Required and

  • CSSBB - Six Sigma Black Belt Preferred and

  • CPN - Certified Pediatric Nurse Preferred
