NBC Universal Senior Costume Fabricator (Full Time) in Orlando, Florida

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Works under the Costume Designer and Fabrication Supervisor and leads the development of construction techniques for newly designed costumes.

  • Instructs Costume Fabrication Leads and Fabrication Specialists in the construction of complex and unique costume pieces with extreme attention to detail and finishing techniques, using a variety of materials.

  • Supports the CAD and hand patternmakers by providing direction on style or assistance with digitizing and digital library management.

  • Focuses primarily on development of new costumes for Capital and Marquee projects.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instructs and directs Costume Fabrication Leads, pattern makers, and fabrication specialists though the patterning and sampling process of newly conceptualized costumes that may require new or unusual construction techniques. Provides work direction to Leads on the construction of all assigned sample costumes from material goods to full completion, including all finishing of costume samples, while maintaining UO fabrication and consistency standards. Possesses advanced ability to lead fabricators in fitting and altering all costumes as needed. Partners closely with the Fabrication Production Coordinator and Supervisor to establish new construction techniques and address labor needs for costume construction development.

  • Ability to translate design concepts/tech flats/sketches drawings/designs in the creation or adaptation of patterns with advanced understanding of hard copy patterns. Able to develop and correct sewing patterns according to Universal Fabrication fit and production standards including body block modification, flat patterning, and draping for pattern development. Able to communicate patterning and construction specifications with internal and external vendors on costume projects.

  • Possesses an intermediate understanding of Accumark CAD software for the development of digitized patterns and markers. Provides guidance to the CAD Designer Costume Fabrication to develop digital patterns and makers following UO costume construction standards. Ensures that Tech Packs for new costumes are completed as needed.

  • Works with Supervisor to develop and ensure training of new and current team members in UO patternmaking standards and costume fabrication techniques.

  • Able to plan and execute full cutting layouts for multiple ply’s of fabric with advanced understanding of grain, nap, and fabric saving techniques.

  • Able to sew costumes and apparel with the skill and mastery of a custom clothier including complex seam and hem finishes on high end fabrics and textiles as well as unusual materials.

  • Perform Craft and millinery work including working with foams, adhesives and other medium.

  • Understand and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    EDUCATION:

  • Associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent from a technical school in Costume/Apparel Construction or related field required.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Costume/Apparel Construction or related field preferred.

    EXPERIENCE:

  • 5+ years advance experience in Garment Fabrication, which includes: Pattern Making, Draping, Custom Apparel Craftmanship, Computerized Sewing Machines, machine stitching and alterations or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 3+ years of costume experience within the theme park/theater industry preferred.

  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Gerber Accumark, and Excel required.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Thorough knowledge of production sewing and garment construction

  • Ability to use both hands & feet simultaneously – to operate industrial machines.

  • Thorough knowledge of operation and general maintenance of all various industrial sewing machines: single needle, overlock, and elastic, flat seams, picot, button & buttonhole, blind stitch, & binding folders.

  • Knowledge of pattern making skills

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced setting

  • Ability to adapt to change

  • Team player with the ability to partner with others to effect solutions.

  • Prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Must be PC computer literate in Applications –Word and Excel

  • Ability to operate & maintain machines; change needles, bulbs, oil, etc

  • Working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Gerber Accumark for the creation of technical drawings, patterns, markrs, and assembly of tech packs for costumes.
