Statement of the Job:

Position is available to employees of the Associated C.O.L.T. Staff of the University of Maine from 05/23/2024 through 05/30/2024 and open to external applicants thereafter.

This is a full-time, regular position with the following schedule:

During fall/spring semester classes: Sunday: 9:30AM–6:00 PM Monday–Thursday: 4:00 PM–12:30 AM

Semester breaks: Sunday–Thursday: 9:00 AM–5:30 PM

Summer: Sunday: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM Monday–Thursday: 1:00 PM – 9:30 PM

This position pays $18.22/hour.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Uses library software and equipment;

  • Performs standard circulation duties;

  • Responds to library building and security issues;

  • Opens and closes library;

  • Maintains library stacks (sorting, shelving, and related duties such as shifting);

  • Assists patrons with search, retrieval, use of library systems and equipment;

  • Generates reports:

  • Processes requests, notices, overdue materials, reserves, serials, library mail;

  • Trains student assistants and library employees:

  • Maintains basic knowledge of library copyright issues;

  • Handles verbal and written communications in assigned area of responsibility;

  • Provides a range of assistance with research and use of materials and resources in all formats;

  • Writes simple to moderately complex queries, performing non-routine searches for library materials;

  • Maintains and updates bibliographic and circulation records and related file procedures, and guidelines;

  • Performs digitization of legacy media formats requiring an advanced knowledge of multimedia applications;

  • Assists with ongoing maintenance of website;

  • Delivers group presentations on library services;

  • Receives and inspects materials;

  • Processes interlibrary loan requests involving substantive research and contacts to resolve issues;

  • Configures a variety of media devices such as digital cameras and recording devices to meet patron needs;

  • Participates in maintaining a safe, welcoming and productive environment for fellow staff and library users;

  • Contributes a positive, creative, and energetic force to the work; demonstrates skills in collaboration especially working with staff members whose interests and needs differ;

  • Commits to organizational improvement by identifying opportunities to improve, and recommending possible alternatives for a situation;

  • Utilizes coaching and mentoring methods which provide an environment that is anticipatory, supportive, and encourages constructive feedback on performance;

  • Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.). One year of related library, public service, or clerical support experience.

  • Public service experience.

  • Employee must demonstrate strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Basic computer knowledge.

  • Skills in organizing and managing electronic records and files required and capability to follow and write instructions and procedures accurately.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks appropriately and complete work in a timely manner.

  • Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Occasionally lifts up to 50 lbs., reaches high and low shelving, walk or move as much as 1/2 mile at a time, and stands and shelves for extended periods of time.

  • Experience working with alphanumeric sequences.

Preferred:

  • Library experience.

  • Ability to drive, normally requiring a driver's license.
