Team & Job Overview

The Digital & Technology Solutions (DTS) group under the leadership of the Chief Information Officer was established in 2023 with the mission of empowering our customers and colleagues to take on the world, by seamlessly delivering secure and reliable digital experiences. Digital & Technology Solutions has set out to achieve the following objectives for EDC:

  • Define, execute, and sustain the integrated technology target state, target data model and technology operations required to enable EDC’s 2030 business transformation.

  • Establish and manage the rolling 3 Year Digital Roadmap that sequences the technology outcomes required to achieve the technology target state and facilitate its execution across all domains in the organization.

  • Keep pace with industry trends and emerging technologies, ensuring EDC has access to the digital technology tools it needs to stay relevant in the market and grow Canadian global trade.

  • Lead and ensure integrated digital, data, infrastructure, and cybersecurity implementations to create excellent customer, user, and employee experiences.

The Director of Enterprise Architecture, reporting directly to the Chief Digital Information Officer (CDIO), is a key strategic leader driving our organization’s digital transformation journey. This role is integral to crafting and executing a comprehensive architectural vision that aligns with our long-term business objectives. As the strategic architect of our digital landscape, the Director will champion the integration of cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions to future-proof our business and better serve our customers. This position involves shaping and communicating a clear architectural roadmap that enables scalability, agility, and efficiency across the organization. This position demands a visionary leader with a deep understanding of enterprise architecture (EA) frameworks, emerging technologies, and business acumen to align IT strategy with business goals. The Director of Enterprise Architecture will oversee the development and implementation of a robust architectural framework that supports the organization’s strategic objectives.

This role requires results-focused individual with strong interpersonal, influencing, and strategic thinking skills to anticipate industry trends and translate them into strategic opportunities for growth and innovation. The ideal candidate will bring a wealth of experience in enterprise architecture, strategic planning, and a visionary outlook to navigate the complexities of digital transformation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, maintenance, and execution of the digital roadmap, ensuring alignment with business objectives.

  • Understand the disruptive forces and the business’s economic and financial levers that are susceptible to digital transformation to effectively guide technology investment decisions.

  • Collaborate and communicate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization (including the lines of business) to understand their needs, integrate them into the digital roadmap while incorporating architectural strategies and policies.

  • Facilitate business and IT alignment with current and future-state mapping of business capabilities through a collaborative, cross-functional, supportive and consultative manner, driving the organization’s digital business strategies and balancing innovation and growth.

  • Construct technology-enabled business and operating models and provides viable options and visibility into execution issues.

  • Lead the development of a value proposition and execution of a communication and education plan for the EA practice and promote accordingly.

  • Develop and implement an enterprise architecture and business strategy and roadmap that supports the organization's targeted business outcomes and technology objectives.

  • Provide visionary leadership and direction for the enterprise architecture team, fostering innovation and continuous improvement.

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of enterprise architects, ensuring their work aligns with the organization's strategic direction and promote professional development to build a high-performing team culture.

  • Establish metrics and KPIs to measure the effectiveness of the enterprise architecture practice.

  • Establish and maintain governance frameworks and processes to ensure the alignment of decisions and work of other architects’ discipline is aligned with the vision and the roadmap.

  • Ensure architectural consistency and adherence to standards across all projects and initiatives through efficient governance mechanisms.

  • Lead the development and maintenance of enterprise architecture artifacts, including principles, standards, guidelines, and models.

  • Lead analysis of the IT environment to identify and mitigate architectural risks and deficiencies, and ensure robust and scalable technology solutions are evaluated, recommended, and implemented according to enterprise architecture principles and business needs.

  • Monitor emerging technology trends and assess their potential impact on the organization.

Screening Criteria

  • Master’s or bachelor’s degree in business, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, system analysis or a related field of study, or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum 10 years of business experience in strategic and operations planning and/or business analysis.

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in at least three disciplines, such as business, information, solution or technical architecture, application development, middleware, information analysis, database management, or operations in a multi-tier environment

  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership and change management experience.

  • Knowledge of business ecosystems, software as a service (SaaS), infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), SOA, APIs, open data, microservices, event-driven IT and predictive analytics.

  • Familiarity with information management practices, system development life cycle management, IT services management, infrastructure and operations, and EA and ITIL frameworks.

  • Understanding of the different types of agile principles, methodologies, and frameworks, especially those designed to be scaled at enterprise level.

  • Understanding of existing, new, and emerging technologies, such as generative AI and its applications.

  • Knowledge of all components of EA, business and IT principles, and processes and tools.

  • Excellent written, verbal, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate new ideas and concepts to technical and nontechnical audiences.

  • Strategic leader and builder of both vision and bridges, and able to energize the appropriate teams in the organization.

  • Ability to lead and motivate the other architects and other technology teams to achieve tactical and strategic goals.

  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills.

  • Bilingual in both official languages (French and English).

Salary Range:

  • Chapter Lead 20: Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $124,273 To $165,696 plus a performance-based incentive.

Location

  • Export Development Canada is a hybrid work environment.

  • This role may be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa, or from the Community Hub in Toronto or Montreal.
