Job summary:

Oversees kitchen operations to serve meals for camp programs in beautiful outdoor settings! The Kitchen Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing a robust food service operation serving Girl Scout campers and staff at summer camp. This team member serves as the primary food service leader who follows established menus, orders food, prepares and serves meals, leads staff, and manages the kitchen/dining environment, with the goal of providing nutritious, appealing, and appropriate food for approximately 225 people per meal.This team member serves as a positive role model, cooperative teammate, and helpful problem solver. The position reports to the Deputy Camp Director.

Summer Camp Kitchen Manager works late May to end of July.

Camp Bette Perot, our equestrian camp near Palestine, TX, offers sleepaway camp for girls ages 7-16. We serve approximately 140 campers per week from a variety of racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Campers come to camp independently and are cared for by camp program staff.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Train kitchen crew in food service operations, including food safety practices, food preparation techniques, dietary accommodations, dining hall preparation and service, cleanup, kitchen processes, and teamwork.
  • Lead kitchen crew in meal service for approximately 225 people at each of three meals plus one snack daily. Supervise preparation, service, and clean up, including organizing supplies, measuring and chopping ingredients, cooking and baking, building serving trays, washing dishes, cleaning workspaces, and maintaining organization in food storage areas.
  • Ensure timely food service, sufficient portions, appealing presentation, dietary accommodations, and excellent food quality.
  • Manage inventory, supplies, and overall operation of kitchen, including placing and receiving food orders.
  • Manage kitchen safety, sanitation, and hygiene standards.
  • Maintain a welcoming and purposeful environment to ensure positive visitor experience for diverse members.

Expectations:

  • This position is based at Camp Bette Perot (Palestine, TX)
  • This position works Sunday through Friday during summer (shared onsite accommodations are available upon request)
  • Willingness to live and work respectfully and fruitfully with diverse staff and campers all day, with limited priva y and personal time
  • Willingness to be active all day, partially in an outdoor environment with variable weather conditions (heat, humidity, rain, wind) and to walk extensively around camp
  • Willingness to role model respect, positivity, smiling, cheerfulness, kindness, patience, honesty, inclusion, good mental hygiene, and accountability
  • Willingness to listen to, learn from, and cooperate with others
  • Willingness to embrace a simple living environment and to use group latrines (private toilets and showers), if living onsite
  • Willingness to model kitchen safety, sanitation, and hygiene standards
  • Current ServSafe food manager certificate
  • Experience in food service
  • Experience leading a team
  • Ability to work long hours all day and all week (staff get personal breaktime each day during the week and days off between sessions as well as extra days off at July 4)
  • Ability to complete full term (all weeks) of camp agreement
Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience in a commercial kitchen (professional food service)
  • Demonstrated ability to plan menus and manage food product orders for group meals of 100+
  • Experience preparing a wide range of foods and using a variety of cooking techniques
  • Experience accommodating diverse dietary needs
  • Highly organized
  • Computer literacy, especially in Microsoft Office programs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working with youth preferred
  • Experience with diverse audiences preferred

Must abstain from:

  • Use of tobacco products, vaping and electronic cigarettes, alcohol, illegal drugs, firearms, and fireworks while on camp property or while on duty, plus abstain from possessing on camp property and from returning to camp under the influence of any such substances
  • Use of explicit language or harmful language
  • Volatile expressions of emotion
  • Wearing clothing that features alcohol, drugs, or harmful topics or language
  • Sharing or discussing private, adult issues with campers
