Summary:

The Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) is an advanced practice nursing role in the operating room that functions in an expanded nursing role, while coordinating patient care through the perioperative continuum. The RNFA utilizes principles of biological, physical, behavioral sciences, clinical observation, and communication theory to identify the surgical patient's optimal outcome. The RNFA will independently coordinate to provide quality, patient centered care, through established clinical practice standards, and will be accountable for evaluating patient responses based on implemented interventions. The RNFA will serve as a resource and role model for expert, clinical practice and focus on expanding the knowledge and skills of others within their entity.

Accountabilities Include:

• Effectively collaborates and applies innovative, systems thinking and engages in systematic, evidence-based problem solving and decision making to promote effective changes within a complex care delivery system supporting the vision of Penn Medicine.

• Minimizes the risk of harm to patients, families, providers, and self through system effectiveness and individual performance.

• Engages in the process of cooperation, coordination, and collaboration in an effort to provide for safe, quality outcomes for patients within inter and intra-professional teams.

• Delegates tasks and responsibilities according to regulatory and accrediting agency standards, facility policies and procedures.

• Advocates for a culture of safety for patients and perioperative team members in the workplace.

• Anticipates and prepares for the needs of the surgical team before, during, and after the surgical procedure.

• Communicates and collaborates with other healthcare providers throughout all phases of care regarding assessments, plans of care, discharge planning, and identifying community resources.

• Acquires, interprets, and synthesizes patient data intraoperatively to formulate clinical decisions for an appropriate plan of care.

• Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures

• Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

Minimum Requirements:

• Must have Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing, at time of hire.

• Must have more than 15 months relevant professional nursing experience and completion of the Nurse Residency Program, if applicable, at time of hire.

• 2+ years operating room experience required.

• Certificate of completion of a RNFA program that meets the AORN recommended education standards for first assistant programs required.

• RNFA required, CRNFA preferred.

• Must possess active Pennsylvania RN License, at time of hire.

• Must possess active BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association at time of hire.

• Must possess active ACLS, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association at time of hire.

• CNOR required.

The Operating Room at Pennsylvania Hospital is comprised of 28 operating rooms in 4 different locations throughout the Hospital allowing staff to assist in performing approximately 19,000 cases a year. The top services provided are Orthopedics, Neurology and ENT as well as other services including urology, foot and ankle, general plastics, vascular and cardiac. The O.R’s are equipped with the latest surgical and video technology that enables our care teams to deliver the very best patient care. Our Registered Nurses provide direct care on elective, acute, and emergent levels from the time of the preoperative interview to the patient's transfer to the PACU post-operatively. Support services are provided by surgical technologists, perioperative assistants, ortho techs and medical secretaries, all of which assist the RN in delivering quality care.
