General Job Description: This is administrative occupational safety management work developing, modifying, implementing, and directing a comprehensive occupational safety program for a large operating department or for the Office of Risk Management on a citywide basis. An employee in this class in an operating department supervises subordinate technical staff, and develops and implements departmental occupational safety programs, policies and procedures. The type of occupational safety program components established and emphasized in each department may vary, but the work must include responsibility for the management of state mandated compliance and training programs, a workers compensation program for employee injury and disability claims, and the inspection, investigation and analyses of department facilities for compliance to occupational safety standards, policies and procedures.

The Requirements are as follows:

Option 1:

1. EDUCATION: Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university with major course work in safety, health, environmental science, or one of the related physical/biological sciences.

AND

2. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Three years of personnel administration or industrial engineering experience, one year of which has involved investigating, analyzing and evaluating program practices, operational or industrial processes and employee injuries as they relate to industrial safety.

AND

3. SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE: One year of occupational safety administration experience which has been directing an occupational safety program for a large agency or in a small agency with a complex structural safety program.

 

Option 2:

1. EDUCATION: Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university.

AND

2. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Five years of experience in occupational safety and health administration or industrial hygiene, which has involved evaluating and addressing workplace conditions, practices, programs and employee injuries.

AND  

3. SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:

One year of occupational safety administration experience which has been directing or providing technical and consultative support of an occupational safety program in a large agency or in a small agency with a complex structural safety program.

 

Option 3:

1. EDUCATION and CERTIFICATION Possession of an Advanced Safety Certificate (ASC) issued by the National Safety Council and an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university.

AND

2. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Five years of experience in occupational safety and health administration or industrial hygiene, which has involved evaluating and addressing workplace conditions, practices, programs and employee injuries.

AND

3. SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE: One year of oc upational safety administration experience which has been directing or providing technical and consultative support of an occupational safety program in a large agency or in a small agency with a complex structural safety program.

NOTE for Option 3: Additional experience or industry recognized certification may substitute for the associate's degree on a year for year basis.
